As flames and thick smoke engulfed a South Delhi guesthouse, turning a routine morning into a nightmare that claimed 21 lives, it was not trained rescue teams but ordinary citizens who became the city's true heroes. Residents of Hauz Rani rushed towards danger, not away from it, improvising life-saving measures in the face of chaos.

Mohammad Afzal and fellow locals spread mattresses and bedsheets sourced from a nearby shop to create makeshift safety nets and carry the injured, while shop owner Riyazuddin Mansoori and his son Arman willingly sacrificed merchandise worth lakhs to save strangers trapped inside. Waseem Raja, drawing on his hospital emergency training, administered CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to unconscious victims blackened by smoke, helping pull several back from the brink. Amid heartbreak, panic and loss, these men embodied extraordinary courage and compassion, proving that in humanity's darkest moments, ordinary people often shine the brightest.
