Happened upon this 360 immersive video. While clicking through, realized my computer fan was revving wayy up. Made me wonder about how viable all the tools we discussed this week could be when students or schools have lower quality computers & hardware to work with #EDU6323
@nms_elearning Or gov. regulated! I'm now imagining a terrifying array of ads and fake news surrounding me, all curated by politics and wealthy corporations 🥴 Not to mention how terrifying it is to think of the biases that are rampant in current tech making their way to "the mesh" #EDU6323
@lynortheastern1 I had some qualms thinking about this this week. Google cardboard is an affordable way for students to experience VR but, again, is yet another technology which requires the use of a smartphone. It works to eliminate one barrier but potentially introduces another. #EDU6323
@neuAnnaK Great question. I think part of the answer is education. Educating ourselves and our students on #edtech benefits and potential consequences will equip us all to make thoughtful, purposeful decisions with technology and elements of "the mesh" in the future (hopefully!) #EDU6323
@jessvalli Good point Jess, if someone had described smartphones to our younger selves or our parents years ago it probably would've felt equally as overwhelming and now practically everyone has one in their hand 24/7! #EDU6323
@eliza_stern I like the idea of incorporating creativity into the classroom using AR/VR. I think this could be especially impactful in STEM subjects as students focused on those areas often feel they aren't allowed to add elements of creativity to their work #EDU6323
@KcookEdu6323 So true, when money comes in to play those good intentions and careful curation or thoughtful implementation can go out the window... #EDU6323
Kelly says the mesh is going to "make the world machine readable." This is just such an intimidating concept when machines are already dominating so much of the new world. Not sure how I feel about it all! 😬 #EDU6323
My first reaction to Kelly's video is that there are so many things going on with technology behind the scenes that are so far beyond what I think is happening and where I think the thresh-holds are and it's kind of scary to think about! #EDU6323
@KatieMu76677376 @EgleSlezas Great share! I was happy to learn about growth mindset bc this is something my colleagues mention wanting to promote within our team but I was never sure what it really was. This article helps conceptualize that & I'm happy to find out it's something really positive! #EDU6323
Can't help but think about inclusivity in relation to polling as so many of the apps we reviewed this week require students to respond via cellphone, tablet, or computer. Maybe not an issue if those are provided but otherwise I could see this being an exclusive practice #EDU6323
@Mlevesque_45 Great question! It's important to me to look at all angles of something new so thinking about the downsides to polling is just as important to me as looking at all the upsides. I could definitely see this potentially being an issue and negatively impacting motivation #EDU6323
@neuAnnaK Honestly I hadn't thought about using the poll for something like an ice breaker so students can get to know a little about each other in an anonymous way, great idea! #EDU6323
Digital polling can also impact motivation in that it can be used as a formative assessment tool. Asking ungraded poll questions often to help students check their knowledge and recognize gaps can motivate them to review material on their own #EDU6323
The only tool discussed this week that I've used is @polleverywhere. I love the word cloud activity - it allows for everyone to contribute. I think polling in general can definitely contribute to motivation because students can voice opinions without being spotlighted #EDU6323
@Mlevesque_45 @EgleSlezas This speaks even more to Wesch's tips on using videos to connect. It's not always just students' learning that benefits... many students are struggling, especially during the last year, and that connection could provide some relief & be more helpful than we realize #EDU6323
(2/2) And I think the digitization of edu resources has also contributed to this. We can access so many things online for free and we no longer have to store them in our houses or lug them around on our backs #EDU6323
