Biomarkers for diagnosing relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs)🩸
This new review outlined the various methods and prevalence of markers used to identify REDs 🔍
Anthropometric Parameters 🩻
👉 BMI, skinfolds, ultrasound, DXA
Bone Health 🦴
👉 Bone mineral density (BMD), oestrogen, leptin, IGF-1, protein, calcium, vitamin D
Metabolic Rate 🔥
👉 Indirect calorimetry, RMR, RMR ratio
Blood Biomarkers🩸
👉 T3, testosterone, LH, FSH, estradiol
Energy Availability 📊
👉 Energy expenditure, energy intake
There are strengths and limitations of many of the above markers, and focusing on markers in isolation should be avoided🚨
The majority (if not all) should be evaluated in combination with other methods ✅
Finally online in @IJSPPjournal!💣🚴♂️
A high-intensity session elicits greater fatigue than a work-matched moderate-intensity one, particularly during short-duration efforts (eg., W'). High-intensity durability is key!

It's been a big week for our group.
Our single-fibre proteomics paper: "Fibre-specific mitochondrial protein abundance is linked to resting and post-training mitochondrial content in the muscle of men" has been accepted by Nature Communications and should be online soon.
I’ve been getting tagged a lot in this post.
“Is this legit?”
For the most part, yes!
Sodium bicarb = high-intensity performance enhancer.
Why does it work? 💊
Sodium bicarbonate increases blood bicarbonate levels, which in turn enhances the blood’s capacity to buffer acid.
Lactate produced during high-intensity exercise is accompanied by hydrogen ions (H+). The accumulation of H+ ions lowers the pH within muscles, leading to acidosis, muscle fatigue, and impairments in muscle contractile function.
Sodium bicarbonate acts as a buffering agent that helps maintain pH levels in muscles during intense exercise. This buffering capacity can delay the onset of muscle fatigue, allowing for sustained high performance.
Research shows that sodium bicarb is particularly beneficial for short-duration, high-intensity activities like sprinting, weightlifting, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) — or so-called anaerobic exercise where glycolysis predominates.
High doses can cause GI side effects though.
