@EyeisBloke@NIHRC@EqualityCommNI I would have thought a male domestic abuse charity would well recognise the damage caused by making victimisation gender exclusive.
@LisaBritton True. Think there's a lot of developmental evidence that kids will become what adults project onto them expectation-wise. Tell them they're monsters in waiting often enough, and you're more likely to get that. Focus more on positive models, and you're more likely to get that.
@TheTinMenBlog The item about using status is interesting given recent studies show that women still date upwards and practice hypergamy. Would they consider women wearing make-up or a revealing dress to get sex to be the female equivalent of men mobilising their status?
@warmheartedmuf1@TheTinMenBlog Yeah i must say that women absolutely police men's emotional expression just as much as other men. All the 'male tears' and 'fragile masculinity' attacks from women are no different to telling men to 'man up'. It's where feminism and patriarchal norms find some kind of nexus.
@warmheartedmuf1@TheTinMenBlog I'm wary of putting too much on 'men need to open up' approaches. Not against that totally, but meet them partway with policies and systems that work for them and don't discriminate against them.
@LisaBritton A huge issue with this is that the mainstreaming of misandry has absolutely led to the creation of more misogyny. How can you tell young men and boys to respect women whilst they are increasingly aware that it's open season on them in the media, politics, social media etc.
@warmheartedmuf1@TheTinMenBlog The issue with blaming toxic masculinity is that the majority of men who take their own lives have actually spoken up and asked for help in the run up to doing it, contradicting TM narratives.
@JamesLNuzzo So, nursing must shed its 'women's work' stigma, but also the strength of nursing is that it's dominated by women. Hmmm. No wonder men don't go into nursing when the RCN itself implies that they don't want that as it would weaken it.
@lens_darkly@kimberl61322223@JamesLNuzzo Similar to women's sports. Globally, men support and watch women's sports more than women, yet men are blamed when women's sporting events are less popular or lucrative than men's.
@LisaBritton Saw an article on the cover of a women's magazine today promoting 'the divorce diet' with pictures celebrating a woman's weight loss after she got divorced. Can only imagine the outrage if the media repeatedly and openly promoted men leaving their wives.
@CathyYoung63@CHSommers It isn't really saying it happens because of marriage though, it's just that it's only married women complaining about it, in service of portraying themselves as the ones impacted. Single men are also socially isolated - but no one is interested in the impact on them.
@TheTinMenBlog@SeagerMJ And the sad thing is that the mainstream media bias and demonisation these boys describe plays a big role in ostracising boys and young men, and opening them up to the internet bogeymen, which the media then grifts on. But then, the media knows this.
@TheTinMenBlog The red flag of these types of studies is that they don't ask men the same questions, because they know they'd get pretty much the same answers about female behaviour. E.g - have women ever spoken badly about exes. Makes me think of that app where women dox their exes.
@TheTinMenBlog Awful as it is, there's something really sad about this. Like she must be such a deeply unhappy person to get a tattoo declaring any hatred. Men must live rent free in her head constantly (especially now she has them indelibly marked on her skin).
@MichaelGLFlood@TheTinMenBlog That's useful. But even here i think if someone disagrees with some aspect of feminist thought, or say doesn't claim a salient feminist identity, i worry that would be read as 'hostility'. If they're also then interested in men's health, then they get castigated as manosphere.
@MichaelGLFlood@TheTinMenBlog And should say of course there are problematic manosphere influencers that require attention, but the broad-brush approach alienates men and boys, and pushes them further in. It's a catch-all bogeyman that means politicians don't need to bother actually supporting men and boys.
@MichaelGLFlood@TheTinMenBlog The issue for me is how the term 'manosphere' hoovers up any male-focused content that isn't focused on problematising men. Someone is being male-positive = manosphere. Someone thinks men are treated poorly by the media = manosphere. Think male health is neglected = manosphere.
