@redasells 1099 with zero overhead covered AND a mandatory commute is just W-2 obligations with zero W-2 benefits. Pure scam. If I’m eating the tax hit and zero base salary, I’m doing it from my couch.
@MadMaxx47920841 @TrpstrLeonOG True, but companies can't just 'choose' 1099 to save on benefits. If you control their hours and supply their gear, the IRS considers them W-2 anyway. Misclassification fines will wipe out those 'benefit savings' real quick 😅
@Janiqua_Nec The fear is totally normal! The secret isn't quitting cold turkey—it's running the math first. Build a 3-month expense cushion and price your 1099 rates 30%+ higher than your W-2 to cover taxes. Once the numbers make sense, the fear vanishes.
@redasells 100%! The math makes zero sense.
You're absorbing all the 1099 self-employment tax + paying out-of-pocket for gas, wear and tear on your car, and unpaid commute time... all with zero W-2 benefits or base pay safety net.
Literally high risk, low margin!
@reggiefilms "Spot on! The IRS 'ordinary and necessary' rule is a lifesaver for 1099s.
Just gotta remind folks: 'necessary' means helpful for your work, not luxury! And always keep those receipts/mileage logs—if it’s not documented, the IRS will happily throw it out during an audit 😅"
@phelps9113@NotKennyRogers Legally, non-citizens get SSNs through valid work permits (EADs), visas, or use an ITIN for 1099 tax filing.
However, platform fraud (renting/buying accounts) is a known issue, though platforms now use Checkr & facial ID scans to combat it.
@mandybutsad You’re 100% right. Pure 1099 commission pitches carry zero risk for companies—no base pay, no benefits, no taxes.
Plus, 1099 income gets hit with a 15.3% Self-Employment Tax. They need to pay 30%+ more just to break even vs W2!

@Here_4_NBA@MrPitbull07 Not quite. Classification isn't about time vs. outcome; it’s about legal control & risk. The IRS defines W-2s by behavioral/financial control, not just wages. Plus, many W-2s earn commission/bonuses tied strictly to output.
@realEstateTrent It comes down to Net Taxable Income. $500k gross often shrinks after aggressive write-offs. Fannie/Freddie look for predictable 2-year net history, not revenue. High-earning 1099s usually go for Bank Statement Loans.

@tlindblad@brian_goldstone That 25-year network and strong family support make all the difference. Nothing beats the lessons learned from lived experience in the 1099 world.
@Here_4_NBA@MrPitbull07 W-2 vs. 1099 is determined by tax classification and employer control, not time vs. output—commission-based W-2s and hourly 1099s exist everywhere.
