"Someone has a great fire in his soul and nobody ever comes to warm themselves at it, and passers-by see nothing but a little smoke at the top of the chimney."
I love Jim Knight’s suggestion that we use cards at the end of class so that each student responds to the question “do you feel safe in this class?” #ISDBears23
"We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both." –Justice Louis Brandeis
I have been intrigued with the idea of vulnerability in our conversations. The theory suggests that being vulnerable in our conversation requires us to listen more carefully in order that we may learn something from another. #ISDBears23
An author or public figure whose work on topic X I love says something about topic Y that incenses me. Do I feel disappointed/betrayed and stop recommending that person's work? Or do I say, "Huh. If someone I respect takes that view, maybe I should rethink my own position on Y"?
Dylan Wiliam @dylanwiliam@IOE_London discusses research on #feedback, its impact on task performance, peer feedback and why we need to provide feedback that improves the learner, and not only the work they submit for assessment https://t.co/04V4seJ1cy #teachers#school#learning #education
Their music, a symbol of the democratic movement in #Belarus, enjoyed immense popularity. Today, the talented musicians of TorBand received sentences ranging from 7.5 to 9 years in jail. One of them, Yauhen Burlo, urgently requires surgery due to his declining health.
@BrettPlayter@KaylaCslp@cristinnowak Hoping this works. Wondering about considering the work of Ron Heifetz and his technical challenges and adaptive challenges
@BrettPlayter How about considering these kind of leadership behaviors around Ron Heifetz and his adaptive challenges and technical challenges. In other words, technical challenges may need a more direct approach whereas adaptive ones may need a more collaborative one
Austrian-German weightlifter Matthias Steiner is a one-of-a-kind fighter. Steiner was married in 2005 to his wife Susan, his biggest supporter. Steiner then decided it was time to retire from weightlifting, but she pushed him to continue.
Steiner promised to compete in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, but then tragedy struck. Susan passed away in a car crash in 2007 before the games began.
Instead of stopping, Matthias made the bold decision to honor his wife through competition. He trained even harder, focused intently, and won the Gold by lifting more than he had ever lifted before. It's an incredible display of emotion, pride, and love.
In the autumn of 1864, Massachusetts Governor John Andrew contacted President Lincoln, requesting that he convey his condolences to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, a widow who was thought to have lost five sons during the Civil War. Lincoln's letter to her was published by the Boston Evening Transcript.
Subsequently, it came to light that out of Mrs. Bixby's five sons, only two, Charles and Oliver, had perished in battle. Of the others, one had deserted the army, one had received an honorable discharge, and another had either deserted or died while in enemy captivity.
The contents of Lincoln's letter are transcribed below:
“Executive Mansion,
Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.
Dear Madam,-- I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
A. Lincoln”
