Speaking at the policy debate on chronic diseases in Europe, @NeufeldM from @WHO underlined the lack of progress in achieving alcohol consumption reduction across Europe and the necessity to take stronger steps. #NCDFreeEurope
Congratulations to all the public heath advocates who have campaigned strongly for this well-evidenced measure, particularly in the face of considerable misinformation.
Interesting to see speculation about potential lawsuits against alcohol producers for not warning consumers about cancer risks. Perhaps time for industry to give up protesting about mandatory health warning labels.

Did you know? #Alcohol is a risk factor for breast cancer, even at low levels. A recent study showed that only 21% of women across Europe are aware of this link.

Is this really true, or just a way to fool policymakers?
We have fact-checked this assumption in our new paper:

[Of course, there are limitations and knowledge rates varied strongly by country etc...
But I personally think it's important to start systematically asking Europeans what they know and believe in relation to alcohol and health consequences, especially cancer]
How much do Europeans know about the link between alcohol use and cancer?
Apparently not too much...

We asked almost 20,000 drinkers from 14 EU countries if they believed that alcohol increases the risk of certain diseases
Here is what we found: 🧵
This confirms findings from our 2023 review, which shows that awareness of specific cancer types is very low: https://t.co/HJ3mQ7XEaA
And it speaks again to the need of cancer-specific health warning labels for alcoholic beverages, which is a standard practice for tobacco
