This Ryanair Boeing 737-800 was just seconds from touchdown when it flew straight through a flock of seagulls.
Several birds struck the aircraft, with some being ingested by its CFM56-7B engines. Despite multiple bird strikes, both engines continued operating normally, allowing the aircraft to land safely. It's estimated that at least 20 seagulls were killed in the incident.
This is the severely damaged right-side CFM56 engine from the Malta Air Boeing 737-800NG (9H-QEU) Ryanair flight FR1879 from Thessaloniki, Greece, to Memmingen, Germany yesterday.
The apparent engine failure resulted in debris being ejected, with fragments striking the fuselage and shattering a passenger window, injuring a 61-year-old man.
There's a missing part of the right engine's left side facing forward that has a hole, probably from hitting the window, which also has a hole.
The damage appears extensive, with the fan and booster sections gone. The high-pressure compressor also shows significant destruction. The aircraft returned safely to Thessaloniki, where it landed without further incident.
