@PoznanProject @holysmoke Yes. When I was learning German at school in the UK, we were taught the masculine and feminine forms of nouns (e.g., Schüler und Schülerinnen). However, it's only recently that I realised that this has political/feminist overtones.

@PoznanProject @holysmoke No. In English, the trend is towards making as many words as possible gender-neutral. An obvious example is "actor", which is rapidly replacing "actress" as the standard term for a female actor.

@WalkerMarcus But that only really applies to graduates of the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin. The MA gown has no special significance at other universities, and many academics outside of Oxbridge and Dublin may not even hold the degree of MA.
