@michaeljoc123 Nice point about the differences between genres! I think those who listen to EDM or other forms of music that rely heavily on technology would probably be more likely to see a show with somebody else “covering” their favourite songs too, compared to a country artist for example
@svernb Good point! I think it can be off-putting to many to hear their favourite songs performed by somebody who sounds completely unfamiliar. But I do still think it would be worth the experience to go to the show
#S22POPMUS I agree with Wald’s statement, I think many people today feel strong connections with their favourite artists that cover bands can’t replace. Also, tech like auto tune changed our expectations of live music. Imperfections are now seen as less beautiful/natural in music
@shane_blundon Absolutely. I’d imagine before streaming people would discover most of their music through suggestions from friends, family or what they heard from the popular tracks on the radio. This would be pretty limiting! But now we have the ability to search an endless library online.
@JK22168 I think too where music is such a huge part of many of our lives, having that access to all of this unique music has likely influenced the way we see the world and others (hearing music from other cultures, etc.)
#S22POPMUS I think streaming services have especially influenced our ideas of identity. We now have instant access to music online from different cultures and styles all over the world, and we can learn about the artist’s experiences and culture through their musical storytelling
@BlakeZoeFrance1#S22POPMUS I think this is especially true in our adolescent years, where young folks are often copycatting their favourite artists (in the way they dress, mannerisms, etc.). I think there is a need for popular artists to be cautious in how they conduct themselves as role models.
@tw7218 #S22POPMUS Yes I believe that the consumption of certain types of music by people is what defines what music becomes popular. So if the people enjoy music that is deemed as dumbed-down, maybe it is just as worthy of artistic praise as other forms of music.
#S22POPMUS Popular music is dumbed-down in the sense that it’s not as artistic as styles such as classical music (ghost writers, commercial/sales focus, etc.). However, the primary purpose of music is for people to enjoy and if I enjoy it dumbed-down, then it is just as valuable.
