@michaeljoc123 Hi Michael, I definitely agree with you there. Although it differs from person to person, I think most people would like to personally experience music rather than simply listen on a streaming device. Both artists and cover bands can put on an amazing show!
I disagree with Wald, as young people today still see live music as the best overall experience. Although it is much more common for people to listen to music through streaming platforms, this is because of the accessibility to the music through advanced technology. #S22POPMUS
@rileyfurey7 Yes, I agree that there is still skill involved, but the credibility of the music should be just as much the African American influencers as it is the 'schlock' musicians.
I believe that although getting inspiration from other music is important in the evolution of music, the cultural theft of schlock rock should be acknowledged. There should be more credit given to its influencers from African American culture. #S22POPMUS
@kona_miura I completely agree. Ray Charles has certainly stood out from his techniques and emotional use of his voice. This helped to keep his roots in gospel music while still respecting the R&B genre.
@Madison05989214 I agree Madison. There are many ways to invoke emotion into a song whether that be from the singer or instruments, and Ray Charles using his breaking voice is just one way of doing so.
I believe Ray Charles uses a breaking voice for a number of reasons. It helps to show his emotion whenever it is used, as well as help differentiate himself from other artists. Ray Charles is also a gospel singer as well as R&B, so this is just another way to stand out.#S22POPMUS
@rileyfurey7 I agree Riley. Spotify has so many features that make listening to music accessible. Being able to download music and listen without internet is a great help and has made streaming music so much easier for everyone.
@trumanosmond23 Great thought Truman. The change in how we listen to music has made it a completely different experience, like being able to listen to music while driving, or going for a walk.
With the addition of streaming services, it has made discovering my own musical taste more accessible and personal to myself. Being able to search any genre, artist, or album with the click of a button has made music much more unique to each individual who uses it #S22POPMUS
@r0dfowler Yes I agree in saying that the top charts make it so it appeals to the largest audience. But this does limit other genres of music people may listen to.
@michaeljoc123 Hi Michael, yes I agree that over time the wide range of genres of music has made it easier to find an individual's musical perspective.
I believe that popular music has definitely been 'dumbed down', but I believe it does not dumb down culture. It alters it to become more in line with the views of capitalism and making mass culture revolve around commodification and profit. #S22POPMUS
