Cigarette manufacturers pay a sin tax, but a significant part of that cost ultimately gets passed on through the supply chain to consumers.

Alcohol attracts state levies such as VAT and excise. GST largely does not apply to alcoholic liquor for human consumption. Again, the burden is ultimately borne by the consumer.

What about traders?

Every trade attracts Securities Transaction Tax (STT). It is a pure participation cost. A trader cannot pass it on to anyone. Not to the exchange. Not to the broker. Not to the counterparty. It comes straight out of the trader's returns, whether the trade makes money or not.

Can we at least reconsider STT for retail traders? Even a reduction or rationalization would provide meaningful relief to lakhs of market participants who contribute to the liquidity and efficiency of our capital markets.
