What's the difference between that and the 19th-century conservatives who thought nobody could govern Mexico better than a foreigner, and who went to Napoleon III to denounce what Mexico was going through, so France would invade us? Who decides who governs Mexico? Who decides who gets tried in Mexico? Who decides which governor to support? Or which candidate to back? Who decides that? The people. Sovereignty resides in the people. That's Article 39 of the Constitution. Sovereignty doesn't reside in a foreign government or in a foreign government's validation. Sovereignty lies in the people's validation of their own government, of their own destiny.

So the problem with Mexico's right wing — the conservatives and the conservative media — is that their validation regarding Mexico is whatever the US government says, or what a US media outlet says.

Their validation is whatever the Wall Street Journal says.

Their validation is whatever a foreign newspaper says.

Their validation is whatever the State Department says.

Their validation is whether you get a visa or not. They go over there to say, "I do have a visa."

That's the validation. No — validation is before the people. Be it Andrés Manuel López Beltrán or anyone else whose visa was taken away.

The question here is whether Mexicans — men and women — are going to allow the one who decides in Mexico to be the United States' validation of something, or the people. For many years under neoliberalism, validation came from outside, not from within. Who gave Salinas de Gortari his validation to become president? Apart from the domestic interest groups and the institutions after an electoral fraud. From outside, who gave Calderón his validation to be president? Well, those on the inside — despite the electoral fraud — and those on the outside. Who should anyone in politics care about for validation? The only validation that should matter is the people's. Because the people elect and the people rule. Anyone who thinks their public validation comes from a media outlet is very mistaken.

Their public validation is what the people think of them, the closeness they have, it's how they behave, it's their honesty — that's what defines their future, their recognition by the people of Mexico. And what's more, if you want to leave a legacy in politics and in life in general — to your children, to your grandchildren — your legacy is the only validation you have: your behavior toward others and toward your family. And if you're in politics: before the people. That's what we stand for — that's why we talk about sovereignty. That's why we say validation doesn't come from a visa. Validation — if you're in politics, the people give it to you. Who do you want to represent? That's the important one — that's the legacy you leave, not a visa or no visa."

💢 REPORT: Premier League Sportswashing Companies Linked to Israel’s Genocide

A 52-page report by War on Want, developed with assistance from the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians, accuses English football of promoting corporations complicit in Israel’s genocide, occupation and apartheid.

➤ Ten clubs have direct sponsors identified as complicit: Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton and Fulham.

➤ Liverpool tops the report’s “table of complicity” with six implicated sponsors, followed by Arsenal and Tottenham with five each, and both Manchester clubs with four.

➤ The executive summary identifies at least 16 complicit sponsors, including AXA, BP, Cisco, Coca-Cola, Expedia, HSBC, Oracle and Standard Chartered. Eight additional companies are considered at risk of complicity.

➤ All 20 clubs are indirectly linked through Barclays, the Premier League’s banking partner, which the report says has financed 49 companies involved in Israeli atrocities.

➤ Israel has destroyed or damaged 265 Palestinian sports facilities and killed at least 565 members of the Palestinian Football Association since October 2023, including players, coaches, referees and staff.

The report contrasts FIFA’s refusal to sanction Israel with its suspension of Russia four days after the invasion of Ukraine. None of the clubs or the Premier League responded to letters from War on Want and ICJP. The FA sent only a brief reply.

Who discusses Muslim women's autonomy at length and has never read a word about what structural adjustment programs imposed by Western-led financial institutions did to female employment, female education, and female healthcare access across the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia in the 1980s and 1990s.

Who can describe in detail the ways Islamic jurisprudence has historically constrained women's rights and cannot name a single woman killed by a drone strike.

This feminist is not unintelligent.

She has simply inherited a feminism that was constructed within empire, that took imperial priorities as its frame, that universalized a very specific, very Western, very culturally located set of concerns about women's freedom while remaining systematically incurious about the relationship between that freedom and the violence done abroad in its name.

Her feminism includes her.

It reaches toward Muslim women instrumentally, when their suffering can be used to argue for Western superiority.

It does not reach toward the women under the bombs.

It does not reach toward the women whose healthcare infrastructure was defunded because the IMF required it.

It does not reach toward the women picking through rubble.
