Given the topicality, and lest we forget, some personal reflections on two, previous "first black professors": Arthur Lewis (Manchester, 1948, at age 33) and Albert ('Bertie') Hines, (Durham, 1968, at age 32), with a reminder that professorships were far, far fewer in number in those times than they are now.
The works of both were on my reading lists as a undergrad in the 1960s. Lewis's magisterial 'The Theory of Economic Growth' was also on my bookshelf, though Hines's challenging paper on the relationship between trade union power and inflation was the more closely studied, because closer to my own interests at the time.
I crossed paths with Bertie in 1971. Having been an exile from God's Own Province for 5 years, I decided to attempt a return. Applications for posts at Durham and Newcastle each induced an offer. Durham was the more attractive academically, largely because of the presence of Hines as head of department, but I landed at Newcastle for other reasons. I didn't know then that he would shortly thereafter move south to Birkbeck College Viewed ex post, opting for Newcastle was a fortuitous decision.
There are short bios of Lewis and Hines on the University of Manchester and Birkbeck websites respectively. These are influenced, albeit to different extents, by later DEI mindsets, but what is beyond dispute is that both were fine scholars -- Lewis's Nobel Prize in 1979 and Hines's work on trade unions and inflation is definitive on that.
When compared with the kind of material produced by Cambridge's Faculty of Education, a thumbnail of Hines's work (see link) suffices to show how far some parts of academia have fallen (but beware generalisations, most parts of my Alma Mater are still alpha plus). The huge gulf in quality should be obvious to all; no familiarity with the social sciences is required. It's enough to make a grown-up social scientist weep.

In fact the effects of man on the environment that could cause climatic change are microscopic in comparison.
The modern concept of “climate change” is a left wing/Marxist ideological construct to change society and enforce control. Sadly, much of the media is part of the conspiracy and there are a lot of gullible people who need to be told what to think and lack the ability to research and think rationally.
Net Zero is part of this attempt to influence behaviours, exerting political and economic pressure on the population to achieve the changes.
We need to fight this evil and educate people that climate is changing as it has done since the beginning of the planet and any changes that we make as a nation, will have no effect. It is in fact just “pissing in the wind””

If so you might want to read on...

I have audited five years of National Lottery Community Fund grants. Not a sample. Not a handful of charities. The grant-level records.

1. THE NUMBER

Between July 2021 and June 2026, I identified 1,694 grants worth £114.7 million across 1,367 recipient organisations, where the published grant record connects the project to refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, migration or immigration.

Think “migrant” is too broad? Fine. Apply the harder test and restrict the search to explicit refugee or asylum terminology. You still get 1,407 grants worth £93.3 million.

2. FOLLOW THE MONEY

Among the largest recipients identified were:
👉Refugee Action at £3.21m,
👉British Refugee Council at £2.97m,
👉Scottish Refugee Council at £1.75m,
👉Task Force Trust / Action Asylum at £1.62m,
👉Refugee and Migrant Centre at £1.10m,
👉Hibiscus Initiatives at £939k,
👉RAMFEL at £930k,
👉Refugee Education UK at £870k,
👉Asylum and Refugee Community Blackburn at £834k
👉Women for Refugee Women at £791k.

These figures are not estimates of their total income, they are the Lottery grants captured by this audit.

3. THEN SOMETHING CHANGED

Identified funding ran at £16.1m in 2021/22, £22.2m in 2022/23 and £13.4m in 2023/24. Then it jumped to £43.3m in 2024/25. The latest period, 2025/26, accounts for another £19.6m.

That 2024/25 figure deserves attention. More than £43 million in a single year, over twice the amount identified in the first year of the audit.

4. THESE ARE NOT ALL TINY COMMUNITY GRANTS

Refugee Action received £2.94m for the Greater Manchester Refugee Step Change Consortium.
British Refugee Council received £2.35m for Childhood First Partnership UK.
Task Force Trust received £1.62m for Action Asylum. Scottish Refugee Council received £1.55m in an award designed in part to distribute funding onwards to refugee-led and refugee-assisting organisations.

That last point matters. A large grant to one organisation can subsequently feed an entire downstream network.

5. WHAT DOES THE MONEY ACTUALLY FUND?

Read the descriptions and a much larger system emerges: immigration and legal advice, housing assistance, benefits support, employment programmes, ESOL, mental-health services, education, integration programmes, casework, representation, women's programmes, asylum-seeker support and onward grant-making.

This is not one refugee programme sitting somewhere inside the Lottery. It is a funding ecosystem spread across hundreds of organisations and projects.

6. £114.7 MILLION IS NOT THE WHOLE PICTURE

This audit covers the National Lottery Community Fund. It does not yet aggregate relevant Lottery expenditure through heritage, arts and sports distributors. Nor does it include the Home Office, councils, NHS bodies, other government departments or private charitable foundations.

So £114.7m is not a calculation of Britain's entire refugee and migration funding system. It is one identifiable funding stream within it.

The National Lottery is presented to the British public in wonderfully simple terms: buy a ticket and support good causes. Quite so. But the public is entitled to know precisely where that money goes.

Five years.
£114,700,291.97 identified.
1,694 grants.
1,367 recipient organisations.

Now comes the interesting part.

Who runs them? Who else funds them? Which organisations fund one another? Which lobby government? Which advise government? Which simultaneously receive government contracts?

Follow the money.

Michaela has two grammar schools nearby - one for boys and one for girls.

At 11, top set kids don’t get in. The ones who might have had a chance, sit the exam and don’t pass it.

Then they attend Michaela: we are their consolation prize.

But 5 years later, they get, on average, more than 2 grades higher on their GCSEs thanks to what they and their teachers do: work hard, no excuses, traditional values and teaching, warm/strict discipline, drive, ambition, and above all, the ability to ignore the haters.

They get GCSE grades that compete with Eton that costs over 50k per year.

They (and other lower ability Michaela kids) then do their A levels, do so well to compete with Winchester and other big boarding schools that cost a bomb.

In a school building with no trees, no grass, no sports hall, no car park for the staff to park their cars! With the trains so loud next to us that the heads of year can barely be heard in the asphalt yard.

Then their headteacher posts a ‘Hooray’ online with a few videos of them getting their results.

Happy kids. How lovely. 🥰

How dare I be happy our kids have done well! Apparently saying ‘hooray’ is ‘crowing’ and ‘over the top’ and I should shut the hell up. How dare I say anything: I should hang my head in shame apparently.

Without irony, these same people post about Jason Arday and how the hate sent his way was unforgivable.

I have wonderful news to share this morning - the Rutherford Cancer Centres are reopening. It has taken years to get this over the line. I am absolutely delighted.

ICON Cancer Care are a leading Australian operator and will do a great job.

I showed them the opportunity in February this year. It has been a pleasure to work with them - a dynamic crew who want to work collaboratively with the local NHS trusts in Reading, Northumberland and Newport.

We are finalising other partners to reopen the three state-of-the-art proton machines for extremely precise radiotherapy. Britain’s proton capacity is beyond woeful, so getting these machines operational again is absolutely essential.

I hope to have more good news to share on this very soon indeed.

Having these centres back open delivering important care is going to save thousands and thousands of lives.

I am so proud of what we have managed to finally achieve.
