“We have the evidence, we have the tools and the expertise. What remains now… is the political will to act collectively.”
Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health & Social Welfare, @muhammadpate, emphasised that strengthening Africa’s health security requires sustained investment not during crises, but between them.
He highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to retrain 120,000 community health workers by 2027 (with nearly 80,000 already retrained), improve workforce data systems, address rural–urban disparities, and implement a national health workforce migration strategy.

H.E. President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko of the Republic of Botswana, Chair of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), today unveiled the #AUMalariaProgressReport2025 at the 39th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa,🇪🇹.
Speaking at a High-Level Malaria Press Conference on the sidelines of the summit, alongside H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan of the United Republic of Tanzania, President Advocate Boko called for renewed resilience in the face of mounting challenges.
While noting that the “perfect storm” against #malaria has intensified over the past year, he noted, "we cannot allow these challenges to reverse decades of progress that have prevented 1.64 billion cases and saved 12.4 million lives since 2000.”

From delivering more than 2.3 billion preventive treatments to seeing over 20 countries reach or near elimination targets for one or more #NTDs, Africa has, in recent years, emerged as a leading force in reversing the trajectory of neglected tropical diseases.
In her latest op-ed, @ALMA_2030's @JoyPhumaphi_ takes stock of this continental momentum while confronting a sobering reality, "We are in a long game, and in a moment that calls for strategic endurance. Declining overseas development assistance and shifting global health priorities are already placing strain on NTD programmes in several countries."
She calls for resilience, adaptive strategies, and sustained commitment to safeguard & accelerate the gains made, and to protect the upward trajectory in the fight against #NTDs.

Malaria doesn’t choose its victims, from boardrooms to shop floors, every family feels its impact.
Ecobank Foundation knows this. For years, they’ve invested in prevention - donating treated nets & repellents, funding awareness campaigns & expanding access to rapid diagnostic tests so workers stay healthy & livelihoods stay secure.
But as CEO Elisa Desbordes notes, the private sector only complements national efforts; it can’t replace long-term investment from partners like @GlobalFund.
If we drop the ball now, Africa risks losing hard-won gains & billions in productivity. Protecting people is protecting growth. Fully fund the Global Fund!
