.@UNReliefChief says “the drought in #Tigray is hitting communities hard, especially those yet to recover from two years of genocidal war…Time is of the essence. We have a short window of opportunity to prevent further deterioration with more funds and an urgent scale-up of the response.”

The recent food aid suspension has shown that the Ethiopian gov't doesn't care for the humanitarian disaster that Ethiopians, Tigrayans in particular, find themselves in. Unfortunately it also shows that the international community doesn't care either.

#Ethiopia: Aspirations to return home for Tigrayan IDPs left hanging in the air despite promises
https://t.co/rjlXHoSooa
Over a year since the #Pretoria_Peace_Agreement was signed in November 2022, bringing peace to much of #Tigray, the challenge of repatriating internally displaced persons (IDPs) remains daunting. The insufficient delivery of humanitarian aid has left many #IDPs without crucial support, and there are disturbing reports of sexual violence and exploitation in the camps that shelter them.
Kiros Assefa, an IDP, recounts her harrowing experience fleeing her home in #Humera during the outbreak of war in November 2020. After a perilous two-week journey, she and her family settled in the #Abyi_Adi IDP camp, where over 54,000 displaced civilians currently reside, awaiting a safe return to their homes. The situation remains critical, with the international community closely observing the plight of Tigray's IDPs, who continue to suffer as they wait for a chance to return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
Despite the presence of #Amhara and #Eritrean forces, some residents in Tigray's contested town of Humera, like Abrehet Tesfu, choose to stay amidst the ruins of war. Abrehet, a mother of five, faces a daily threat to her family and property. She shares with Addis Standard her harrowing experiences of unlawful detentions and her husband's unjust imprisonment, all while being unable to sell her goods or property due to restrictions by armed groups.
The political analyst Tsegaze’ab highlights the grim reality of ethnic Tigrayans being forcibly displaced and replaced by others, a process he describes as genocidal. He criticizes the lack of adherence to the Pretoria peace agreement and the indifference of the interim administration to the plight of Tigrayans.
A United Nations report implicates the government of Ethiopia in war crimes during the conduct of its two-year war in the country's northern Tigray region. https://t.co/JHKtpsRCyb
If AU’s envoy numbers are accurate, death toll in Ethiopia is more than
- Syrian war in 10 years
- Russia’s war in Ukraine
- Iraq war
- Afghanistan war
- Lebanon’s war in 15 years.
Yet conflict in #Tigray gets much less coverage than those.
Majority of those who insult me on Twitter and troll me relentlessly are Amhara far right "One Ethiopia" movement & ethno-imperialists.
Reason is clear. My egalitarian, democratic, anti-imperialism does not jive with them.
Their values based on conquest, supremacy, warfare.
Too early to make judgement on Tigray peace.
Guns silent, mostly, but misery, helplessness of Tigrayans continues in multiple ways.
On Mon-Tue Addis cut power, telecom to Tigray for 12 hrs. No explanation. Same day TDF disarmed.
Satellite data shows no Eritrean pullout
News: Tigray’s biggest hospital remains short of medical supply despite peace deal, pleads for laboratory reagents - Addis Standard https://t.co/HnI4pqk4zM
Ethiopia is making encouraging progress towards peace. But enemies of peace abound. Situation fragile and reversible.
Moves by some Western states to ease sanctions and reward Addis at this stage is premature and could be counterproductive.
Humanitarian workers in #Tigray say troops from neighbouring #Eritrea – which should have withdrawn under the terms of the Ethiopia peace truce are still present in several towns there, a region where millions remain hungry and needing aid. Asmara has not commented - Reuters.
“After Pretoria, it should come as no great surprise that the blockade that could not be recognized, was not lifted; the army who could not be recognized, has not left Tigray; and the genocide that the world refused to recognize, did not end.”

When #Ethiopia’s regime sent a multi-agency delegation to #Tigray this week, the Health & Education Ministries didn’t join. This war destroyed nearly all of Tigray’s schools & health sites. 2M+ kids are without schooling. Ayder Hospital, the largest, is still without medical aid.
Reps from 30 states led by mediators Uhuru Kenyatta and Olusegun Obasanjo have arrived in Mekelle to give impetus to Nairobi-Pretoria accords.
A positive symbolic step.
One hopes this international unity will translate into resolve to expedite pullout of all non-ENDF forces.
