NEW: Columbus, Georgia, police chief Stoney Mathis has a blunt message for anyone who targets his police officers:

"If you commit murder in the city of Columbus and then you shoot two of my police officers, we're going to kill you."

The comment from Mathis came after a suspect, 33-year-old Jerome Willis, shot and killed a manager at a Dollar General before getting in a shootout with police officers.

An officer and a police K9 were shot by the suspect.

Police returned fire and killed Willis.

The police officer and the K9 who were shot are expected to recover.

Willis had recently been released from prison. As a juvenile, he was sentenced to 20 years for robbery.

He was released before being convicted of terroristic threats in 2024. After serving two years, he was released before murdering Dollar General manager Alexis Hill.

Authorities say Willis handed two crumpled $1 bills to Hill for $1.58 hamburger buns. As she was straightening the money, he pulled out a gun and shot her.
