Meet two of our speakers at OpenInfra Days Kenya 2026: Paul Mayero and Sharon Koech, who will give a talk together.

Paul is a software engineer and open-source contributor at F-Droid. Sharon is a Technical Author in the @OpenStack team at @Canonical where she works on the @Ceph documentation, and she co-leads the OpenInfra User Group Kenya.

Their talk: S3 server on your Android device.

The price of computing devices keeps rising, and tinkerable hardware like the @Raspberry_Pi is in short supply because of the AI chip race.

But there is a good chance you already own a capable computer: an Android phone, maybe an old one sitting in a drawer. Android runs on over 5 billion devices, and underneath it is a customised version of Linux.

Paul and Sharon will show how a typical Android phone can be configured as a general purpose Linux server and run an S3 service, using Garage, an open-source S3 tool built for low-resource devices.

You will learn about Android configuration and about running Garage.

If you know what an Android phone is, want to run S3 on one, and like to live a little dangerously, this one is for you.

One unexpected highlight was an impromptu visit to the @GridlessCompute offices.

As fellow tenants at @NodeNBO, the team welcomed us into their space, where @whiteafrican walked the grantees through some of the work they're doing to help decentralize bitcoin mining through their mining operations across Africa.

It sparked great conversations around energy, infrastructure, and the role African builders can play in strengthening the bitcoin ecosystem.
