Gareth Mnisi, the suspended Chief Financial Officer of the City of Tshwane, faces intense scrutiny after divorce court papers exposed his extravagant lifestyle. The affidavits describe a supercar collection that seems impossible on a municipal salary alone, with most wealth held in two trusts. A judge remarked it beggars belief that such a young couple amassed these assets without clear financing details.

The fleet includes a 2023 Porsche 911 Turbo worth about R6 million, used as a leisure vehicle, and a Porsche Targa. There is also a 2023 BMW X6 M50D for work, two Range Rovers—one with a personalised plate referencing his wife's name and date of birth—plus two BMW 125i models, an older BMW X6, a Mercedes-Benz CLA 45, a Toyota Hilux Single Cab, and a new Volkswagen Golf 8R. In December 2023, his wife bought a Maserati Levante for R2.2 million, mostly financed by her.

Mnisi started at Tshwane on 1 November 2023 after a prior municipal CFO role in western Gauteng. He claims his only income is his salary and denies deeper ties to an entity where he did ad hoc consulting. The wife, 31 with only Grade 10 education and describing herself as a housewife, detailed first-class international travel and the couple's lavish life.

The High Court judgment from the Rule 43 application highlighted Mnisi keeping details close, offering no explanation for the wealth in the family trust registered in 2016 and the business trust from 2021. These revelations have resurfaced amid his current suspension process linked to Madlanga Commission testimony on alleged tender issues.

As Tshwane Council weighs precautionary suspension after allegations of sharing confidential information, the car fleet remains a stark symbol of the gap between claimed earnings and actual possessions. Mnisi continues to fight the process while preparing for his postponed commission appearance.

Public attention now centres on whether the supercars and trusts reflect legitimate success or raise deeper accountability questions for a senior public official in a cash-strapped metro. The story underscores ongoing debates about lifestyle audits for those in municipal finance roles.

Tribunal Orders Anele Mdoda’s Husband to Repay Over R14 Million in PPE Contracts

The Special Tribunal has ordered Bonelela “Buzza” Mgudlwa, husband of Anele Mdoda, and his business partner Katleho Mokonyane, daughter of ANC First Deputy SG Nomvula Mokonyane, to repay more than R14 million linked to irregular COVID-19 PPE contracts.

In a judgment delivered on 25 March 2026, Judge David Makhoba ruled that two contracts awarded to their company, Tark Group Pty Ltd, by the Mpumalanga Department of Health were unlawful, constitutionally invalid, and void from the outset.

The tribunal found that procurement processes were bypassed and that the company failed to meet key compliance requirements.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed that the department paid over R14.3 million for medical jumpsuits and surgical masks, despite the supplier lacking proper accreditation at the time and failing to disclose potential conflicts of interest.

In a significant move, the tribunal pierced the corporate veil, holding both Mgudlwa and Mokonyane personally liable after finding they acted fraudulently and dishonestly in securing and executing the contracts. They have been ordered to repay the full amount, forfeit any profits, and cover the SIU’s legal costs.

The case forms part of the SIU’s broader efforts to recover public funds lost through irregular procurement during the COVID-19 pandemic. No criminal charges have been announced in relation to this matter.

The announcement has sparked strong reactions across social media, with many residents expressing hope that the appointment will lead to stricter enforcement of municipal by-laws and improved service delivery across the metro.

The announcement regarding the reshuffling in Ekurhuleni was made on Tuesday night.

Community members believe Khumalo’s leadership could signal a tougher stance on issues such as illegal land occupation, by-law violations, crime hotspots, and undocumented immigration within Ekurhuleni.

Calls for decisive action have grown louder in recent months, with residents demanding safer communities, cleaner streets, and greater visibility from law enforcement.

Recently, the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) called for the arrest of Khumalo and the Sizok'thola crew, alleging that they assaulted seven individuals during a drug-related operation in which Emeka Clement Uzor was shot and killed on allegations of being a drug kingpin.

Khumalo is a well-known public figure due to his role on Sizok’thola, a programme focused on crime and community safety, where he has built a national profile by confronting alleged drug dealers and exposing criminal syndicates.

This is not his first encounter with the law. Earlier this year, he handed himself over to the SAPS and was charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) and pointing a firearm. Despite these allegations, ActionSA said it would not suspend Khumalo, describing the charges as false and politically motivated.

In 2024, his activism became entangled in a high-profile legal case following a confrontation in Katlehong that resulted in the death of Robert “Kicks” Varrie, a suspected drug dealer.

Khumalo is due to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court today over allegations that he assaulted a suspected drug dealer.
