Prosecutors allege that he posted a self-recorded video on Facebook on 10 July 2026, urging Zimbabweans to join planned protests against Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 scheduled for 31 July 2026. In the video, he was seen holding a placard reading “NO TO 2030.” The State says the planned protest was not reported to the relevant authorities as required by law. The matter remains before the courts.

This man is Bhekimpilo Mbedzi, who is currently in prison in Zimbabwe for nothing more than expressing his intention to protest against a new constitutional amendment that extends President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office and removes Zimbabweans’ right to directly elect their President. He did not commit an act of violence. He simply exercised his right to speak out and insisted that the Constitution be followed. The law he opposed was not subjected to a referendum, despite fundamentally altering Zimbabwe’s constitutional order. For that, he was arrested, detained and denied bail. Today, he appeared in court wearing leg irons that have visibly swollen his ankles. Shackling a peaceful political activist in this manner is not the conduct of a government confident in its own legitimacy. It is the conduct of a government that fears dissent and seeks to intimidate those who demand constitutionalism and accountability. This is one of the reasons why so many young Zimbabweans have lost faith in the current political establishment. When peaceful disagreement is criminalised and citizens are imprisoned simply for insisting that the State obey its own Constitution, hope in democratic institutions inevitably erodes. President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s final legacy should have been one of national unity, constitutionalism and reconciliation. Instead, images such as these tell a very different story. Repression has never extinguished resistance to illegality; it has only strengthened it, drawing greater attention to the very issues the authorities seek to silence. Bhekimpilo Mbedzi is not an enemy of Zimbabwe. He is a citizen asking his government to abide by its own Constitution. He has not advocated violence or taken up arms against the State. He should be released immediately and allowed to exercise the constitutional rights guaranteed to every Zimbabwean. Bhekimpilo Mbedzi who is the Matabeleland South provincial chairperson of the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), is not a criminal. He should not be in leg irons, and he should not be in prison simply for peacefully expressing his intention to protest and insisting that the State abides by its own Constitution. In any society that respects the rule of law, such conduct is protected, not punished.
