Air Zimbabwe’s direct service to London is more than a flight path. It is Zimbabwe’s reconnection with the world, opening channels for trade, tourism, investment and the diaspora.

The fixation on who owns the aircraft is misplaced. Leasing is the norm in global aviation. The real prize is the route itself and the opportunities it unlocks. London is the start. Beijing, Dubai and Guangzhou could follow, each new link widening Zimbabwe’s reach.

Yesterday on the French coast, illegal migrants sat just metres from French gendarmes, waiting for their opportunity to cross into the UK.

The UK has committed hundreds of millions of pounds to help prevent these crossings.

Yet on the ground, all too often, it looks like little more than observation instead of intervention.

How can anyone claim this strategy is working?

So the government says no plans for a ban but no plans to properly fund genetic counselling either. You cannot have it both ways. Either invest in screening or admit you do not care about outcomes.

Don’t do it - Prof Sam Oddie, a consultant neonatologist and researcher at Bradford Teaching Hospitals, has worked in the city for more than two decades.

Over the years he has observed lots of severe genetic disorders. "I've seen fatal skin conditions, fatal brain conditions, fatal muscle conditions".

He says it was "immediately clear" these conditions were occurring more in Bradford than elsewhere.

He remembers some tragic examples: families who lost several children, one after the other, to the same genetic disorder. "That's very upsetting and very difficult for the family to get their heads around."

This practice should be outlawed and made illegal.
