Maritime traffic remains resilient

A total of 53 confirmed vessel crossings were recorded across the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb on 28 July, with 12 transits through Hormuz, an increase of 50% from the previous day, and 41 through Bab el-Mandeb, up 5%. Traffic through Hormuz remained highly concentrated, with 10 of 12 vessels using the Iranian Unilateral Scheme and none using the Hormuz Traffic Separation Scheme. In Bab el-Mandeb, the latest data identified 4 dark transits, 4 sanctioned vessel crossings and 8 shadow fleet movements, reinforcing that while commercial traffic continues, routing behaviour and vessel transparency remain the key indicators of operational, compliance and geopolitical risk.

Traffic rises, risks persist

Daily monitoring shows stronger transit volumes across the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, with 12 and 41 confirmed crossings respectively on 28 July. Yet higher traffic should not be mistaken for lower risk. Hormuz routing remains concentrated outside traditional traffic separation patterns, while Bab el-Mandeb continues to present elevated operational and compliance challenges through dark transits, sanctioned vessels and shadow fleet movements. With 62 confirmed maritime security incidents recorded by the IMO as of 27 July and geopolitical tensions still unresolved, vessel behaviour remains a more meaningful indicator than crossing volumes alone. For operators and markets alike, transparency, routing choices and emerging disruptions remain the key signals to watch over the coming days.

ستصبر السعودية على معتوه صعدة عبدالملك الحوثي وجماعته لحين من الزمن، وستستخدم كل الوسائل السلمية والدبلوماسية، وستوسط سلطنة عمان وإيران، حتى يرى العالم أنها عملت ما عليها وزيادة، وبعدها ستتدخل للمعتوه وجماعته إلى صعدة وصنعاء وتسقط سلطته وتجعله عبرة لغيره.

Strait of Hormuz over the last 72 hours: escalation continues.

Visible vessel traffic fell off a cliff. Only the Iran lane has vessels with AIS on, nothing in the Oman lane. We know there were still transits because UKMTO reported vessels being attacked and IRGC said 4 vessels were attacked yesterday. One tanker, Kavomaleas, was hit and caught on fire. You can see that in the video time-lapse.

The Oman lane will remain heavily contested. Bloomberg reported that tanker owners are offering 6 months' worth of pay if the crews make the voyage in and out of the Strait of Hormuz. How much is your life worth?

I guess we will see how long this continues, but what's obvious is that this conflict remains all-or-nothing.

The Saudi Arabia-flagged oil products tanker Encelia (IMO 9240172) was impacted by a projectile. TradeWinds cited Vanguard as confirming the Encelia. The Houthis named a second tanker - but as always, and since 2023, I wait for independent maritime authorities to confirm all details before adding to our map below that tracks maritime attacks in the MENA region since 2017.
