I’ve spent an incredible week in Botswana with @FondationLOreal and @UNESCO for the #FWIS2023 Young Talents Sub- Saharan Africa Awards.
Proud to have won the award, and grateful for the opportunity to empower and be empowered by women in science! 🙏@4womeninscience
This has been such a transformative experience to work with the @Hennepin in Minneapolis under their Public Health( strategic initiatives) department. I have grown and hope to keep all relationships.

Nthabeleng Hlapisi is working in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with Hennepin County Public Health. She will support strategic initiatives, including community engagement, developing communications, leading health-related strategic planning discussions, and coordinating with partners on planning and initiatives.
This extended opportunity will allow Nthabeleng to deepen her leadership expertise, explore innovative approaches in her field, and gain hands-on experience that will benefit her community upon her return to Lesotho. We are proud of Nthabeleng’s achievements and can’t wait to see the impact she’ll make! #MWF2025 #MWFLesotho2025 #Yali2025

Meet Nthabeleng Hlapisi, the ninth fellow of Lesotho’s 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders cohort.
Nthabeleng is an emerging leader in medicinal chemistry and public health, currently pursuing her PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. With a deep scientific curiosity and commitment to improving health outcomes, she focuses her research on Lesotho’s indigenous plants, exploring their potential to produce affordable and effective cancer treatments.
Nthabeleng combines rigorous academic research with a passion for community-centered healthcare solutions, advocating for treatments that are not only innovative but also accessible to the populations that need them most. Her strong analytical skills, dedication to evidence-based science, and collaborative mindset position her as a future leader in health policy and research in Lesotho.
She aspires to establish a dedicated cancer research laboratory in Lesotho to drive locally relevant studies and inform policies that improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Through her work, Nthabeleng bridges the gap between scientific discovery, policy development, and real-world impact on public health.
Nthabeleng will spend six weeks at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, under the Leadership in Public Management track, and will also spend an extra four weeks in a Professional Development Experience (PDE) to further advance her practical skills and research expertise. We are proud to spotlight her inspiring journey! #MWF2025 #MWFLesotho2025 #YALI2025
