A new report from the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, Oil Change International, and MENA Fem Movement for Economic, Development and Ecological Justice highlights the link between reliance on fossil fuels and rising debt in the Global South.
The report titled “Spillover Effects: The Fossil Fuel-Debt Trap in the Global South,” shows how many countries across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and parts of Asia are entrapped by unjust debt which prevents them from moving away from fossil fuel consumption and production. Some nations are encouraged to expand fossil fuel production to service debt - crowding out investment in renewable energy and undermining climate action, as well as the delivery of critical public services such as health and education.
It highlights that achieving an equitable transition requires global efforts to address unjust debt and reform unfair international financial systems.
