Eighty years ago, the world witnessed an unimaginable devastation. The atomic bombings of #Hiroshima80 and #Nagasaki80 in August 1945 left an indelible scar on humanity—one that continues to serve as a moral and legal warning against the very existence and possession of nuclear weapons. That same year, the United Nations was founded to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war,” a goal enshrined in the opening words of the U.N. Charter. In 2025, as we commemorate these intertwined 80th anniversaries, we are reminded that the fight for nuclear abolition is not a historical obligation alone—it is a present and urgent necessity.

I recently visited Hiroshima, and stood at the epicenter of a city scarred by the unimaginable horror caused by a single nuclear bomb dropped in 1945. What I saw, the stories I heard, and the haunting sadness that remains, will stay with me forever.
