"Cracks in the Foundation of the NPT," my take on the #RevCon in Arms Control Today https://t.co/xRnvLC8LYs Repairing the imperfect but irreplaceable NPT regime and achieving real progress on disarmament is not optional. But it will take time, creativity, and smarter leadership.
Huge thanks to @RCW_ for their vital #NPTRevCon reporting, keeping civil society connected to the floor & the world informed. A powerful touch to feature the Hiroshima A-bomb Dome on the first & final covers—a solemn reminder of why this work matters. 👇 https://t.co/SdZEYlKNMl

@lcnp_nyc Executive Director Dr. Deepshikha Kumari Vijh delivered a statement on behalf of the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms and the Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy along with other civil society partners at the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty from the floor of the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations, NY. Our statement emphasized the legally binding obligation of Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the significance of the 1996 Advisory Opinion on the Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons, wherein, the International Court of Justice affirmed that there exists “an obligation to pursue in good faith and bring to a conclusion negotiations leading to nuclear disarmament in all its aspects under strict and effective international control.”

The Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy is hosting a side event at the NPT Review Conference at UNHQ, NY on April 30th, 2026.
This year marks 30 years since the 1996 ICJ Advisory Opinion on the legality of Nuclear Weapons, a landmark case initiated by a civil society movement that raised the critical question of whether any use or threat of use of nuclear weapons can ever be lawful. IALANA, along with other civil society partners and several LCNP Board members, played a central role in the World Court Project that brought this significant issue to the ICJ.
During this event, we will discuss State legal obligations under Article VI of the NPT and reflect on the 30 years since the ICJ Advisory Opinion, which underscored the obligation of states to pursue negotiations in good faith towards nuclear disarmament.
