@binneystreetbio@MattBruenig@jasonfurman@edavidds But “market income” is not a no-intervention baseline. It’s generated by property, labor, corporate, contract, IP, monetary, and antitrust law. Pre-tax income is already endogenous to policy; tax/transfer progressivity only measures one layer of redistribution.
@MattBruenig @JStein_WaPo The gap between the top 1% and bottom 50% became ~58x smaller, from ~46,207x to merely 790x. We're on track for complete equality between the top 1% and bottom 50% by 2035!
@VVBellerose@CentralUnplan@MattBruenig Smashing together two things that have bad vibes ("negative" and "income tax") is going to give people who just hear it in passing and don't bother trying to understand it at even a cursory level (so almost everyone who hears about it) bad vibes.
@augustofretes@MattBruenig@Noahpinion Still gotta have an accounting of initial property acquisition. How did the person who had the "something" get it, and regress. Eventually you get to illegitimate violent theft of the commons. Which you can legitimize through laws for expediency of course, but same with taxes.
@willietrom@Alexand3rTheMeh I don't think Bruenig considered shame, associations or anything.
He's an args man through-and-through, and probably likes getting more income than posting to his blog.. He's contributed to the NYT+Washington post after all, which have far more heinous contributors than Yggy.
@karimbitar@DavidKlion@TVietor08 Accountability for those with political power, big tent for everyone else. Only debate should be which side "public figures" with no formal political power or ties fall on.
@constans@michaeldomps ~49% of people are nonworkers (children, elderly, home caretakers, disabled, unemployed, etc). You think <2% of the employed population (of which >20% have less than full-time hours), are not upwardly mobile?
@queersocialism@TaylorLorenz The original post says "meaner" and "more apathetic", and Taylor said people value lives "less than they did 5 years ago".
Those are all comparative claims, and imply the problems existed beforehand and the COVID response exacerbated them! What is your disagreement here?
@William43130046@spooleyhi@JHWeissmann People don't like being thrown off their health insurance. With M4A in-place, a repeal throws literally everyone off their health insurance.
@3RenChengHu@MattBruenig@mattyglesias Treating capital gains the same as lottery winnings would represent ~50% increase in capital gains taxes in the US (and that's treating the benefits of realization timing control, tax-loss harvesting, and step-up basis as nil!).
@crude2refined@joseph_h_garvin@colin_fraser Same way stochastic search can generate super optimized pieces of code https://t.co/LJZSjt8UqY
