@Eli_Vb15@beh353 Hey Eli,
I like how discussed the importance of using nutrition as a form of preventative care. Many prevalent illnesses in the U.S. such as obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and heart disease can be prevented by a healthy diet. #BEH353@beh353
Our society has a negative attitude toward fats. All fats have been labeled as "bad". There are good fats our body needs to function properly. Taking fats out of one's diet may create a deficiency in necessary nutrients @beh353#BEH353
Sports dietitians used to say "Eat less fat," but today our message is "Eat the right kinds of fat". #Peanutbutter, #nuts, #salmon, and #oliveoil are some positive choices that promote good health and knock down inflammation.
As a future OT, I will be working in rehab. Patients in rehab must eat the right foods to improve bone health and muscle function. I will advise them to integrate protein, Ca, and vitamin-packed foods into their everyday recipes to make them more nutrient dense.#beh353@beh353
@AniOurfalian@EmmaDArpinoRD@beh353 Hey Ani,
I like that you brought this up! It is counter-productive to shame people for eating unhealthy foods. Instead, we should encourage them to add more fruits & veggies to their diet or supplement with more nutritious ingredients in their favorite meals. @beh353#BEH353
As learned in class, people cannot be addicted to "forbidden foods" like one would be addicted to drugs. This article discusses political, economic, and commercial forces influencing people's decisions to continuously eat unhealthy foods. #beh353@beh353
It is a waste of money to buy Emergen-C (1,000mg VIT C), over an orange (70 mg VIT C). The extra vitamin C will be processed through the kidneys and urinated out. We need to keep portion sizes in mind and how much of a nutrient our body absorbs. #beh353@beh353@EmmaDArpinoRD
Childhood obesity was an important topic discussed in class last week. The taxing of soda was one approach the UK took to reduce childhood obesity. However, the outcomes were not as impactful as other tax policy interventions @beh353#BEH353
I favor soda taxes, but I don't expect them to curb obesity.
The UK started taxing soda at about $.30/liter in 2018, specifically to tackle childhood obesity.
Doesn't look great. Of course, might have been worse without the tax! But not compelling.

@joelleperron15@beh353 Hey Joelle,
I think this was a great resource! It was easy to follow and contained good information. I liked the section discussing the importance of involving kids in the meal-planning process.@beh353#beh353
https://t.co/Rm3Kllc2at This website is easy to follow and from a reputable source. The website contains info on children's diets(more fruits and veggies, less protein), portion sizes, and involving kids in the kitchen. It also has educational games on food.@beh353#beh353
As discussed in class this week, weight and health are not always synonymous. There are many other ways to tell if someone is healthy and their body is functioning properly. The healthcare system continues to use the outdated approach of relying on weight. @beh353#beh353
It is important healthcare providers understand that weight and health are not perfect synonyms. Someone's weight does not define their health, there are many reasons people may be experiencing symptoms, and clinicians cannot assume it's their weight. @beh353#beh353
In class this week we discussed the impact limited access to healthy foods has on obesity. In this article, the author explains possible longterm outcomes in the US unless preventative measures are implemented that bring nutritious foods to vulnerable populations. @beh353#beh353
@ryleybeh353@beh353 I have noticed older relatives discuss frustrations with their metabolism with age and how they can no longer "eat what they want". That being said, behavior changes toward healthy eating should happen at any age even when we are young. @beh353#beh353
I found it interesting the U.S. spends less on food than ever before and more on healthcare than ever before. This shows the US needs to prioritize preventative care against obesity by investing in policies that reduce the cost of fruits and vegetables. @beh353#beh353
This week, we discussed barriers to eating healthy. One barrier is that people just aren't motivated to eat healthy or exercise. One way to address this is to make small adjustments or "customizations" to our favorite meals to make them more nutrient dense. @beh353#beh353
@AKPici025@beh353 Hey Akela,
I agree, I have friends and family members who have very poor diets. When I socialize with them I am always surrounded by unhealthy foods and beverages and because everyone is eating these foods I would feel uncomfortable saying no. @beh353#beh353
One barrier to healthy eating I have noticed is time. I am a full-time student taking 6-7 classes a semester and working on weekends. I rarely have time to go grocery shopping or meal prep healthy meals for the day. Much of my diet is food I can find on the fly. @beh353#beh353
@StarRaygoza@beh353 I like that you brought this up. Ashwagandha is a popular supplement on the market right now. It's scary to think how many people are buying similar products without knowing what they are ingesting or its actual benefits. @beh353#beh353
https://t.co/3fGUwDJnxD I know people who take B-12 for an energy boost and improved mood. According to this article, "no clinical evidence suggests that B-12 can boost energy in people who already have ample stores of it." @beh353#beh353
One discussion from class this week was the meaning of organic and the importance of understanding what kind of environment our produce is coming from. If you want to ensure your food is coming from an "organic" source, raising produce at home is always an option. @beh353#beh353
Spring is soon to have sprung, have you started any seeds yet? Check out this @acreageliving article to see how you can produce more flavorful produce at home!
