Police have launched investigations into six serious criminal cases following a violent incident in Lethabong, North West, on Friday afternoon, 5 June 2026, where three employees of a fibre installation company were attacked by members of the community.
According to preliminary reports, the three male employees, aged between 31 and 32, were allegedly accosted, assaulted, and forcibly detained by a group of community members.
During the incident, the victims were robbed of their personal belongings, while two of them sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the incident has resulted in the opening of cases relating to public violence, attack on police, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), kidnapping, malicious damage to property, and robbery with a weapon other than a firearm.
Police further revealed that the company vehicle, a Suzuki Swift used by the fibre company employees, was allegedly set alight and burnt to ashes in front of the Lethabong Police Station, escalating tensions during the incident.
A 29-year-old suspect has since been arrested in connection with the attack and is expected to appear in court soon.
Police indicated that investigations are continuing and that additional arrests may still follow as more information comes to light.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Ryno Naidoo strongly condemned the violence, vigilantism, and criminal behaviour linked to the incident. He urged community members to raise concerns through lawful processes and warned against taking the law into their own hands.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist investigators to contact the Lethabong Station Commander, Captain Lesego Ntsimande, or provide anonymous tip-offs through Crime Stop or the MySAPSApp.
