We're building the open data infrastructure Namibia's informal settlements need, mapped with communities, not just about them. Partners: local authorities,NHAG, researchers Funders: help us scale from pilot to national coverage 📍 Residents: your community can be mapped too.

1 in every 2.4 urban Namibians lives in informal housing.
606,435 people. 176,708 households. 41.6% of the urban population.
This isn't a side issue for land administration in Namibia - it's the main issue. #NUST #LandGovernance

@ConnieScouts Nepal is currently facing a catastrophic humanitarian and infrastructure crisis following devastating flash floods triggered by a glacial collapse and heavy rains along the Bhotekoshi River near the Tibet border on August 26, 2026.

Air quality affects health, but data are often fragmented across regulatory monitors and sensor networks.

Fresh aerial imagery isn't always there when you need it. that's where @Mapillary comes in. 📸 We tested it during our fieldwork in Okahandja Park in #Windhoek, and it delivered. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Why This Matters for Local Authorities -For every municipality in this data, Gobabis, Rundu, Oshakati, Okahandja and more, accurate settlement maps mean: ✅ Better service delivery ✅ Faster formalisation ✅ Evidence for funding proposals ✅ Early warning on informal growth

[Namibia OpenStreetMap Community. @OSMNamibia]

From Report to Platform. This baseline report by @namstatsagency tells us how many. Our platform will be built to answer where exactly, what's there, and what's changing continuously, not once every few years. Static PDF reports → living, open geospatial data. That's the shift

[Namibia OpenStreetMap Community. @OSMNamibia]

What We Do
@OSMNamibia uses participatory mapping + OpenStreetMap to put informal settlements literally on the map, street by street, structure by structure, verified by the residents who live there. Because you can't plan services for places that don't exist on any map.

[Namibia OpenStreetMap Community. @OSMNamibia]

The Percentage Story -Raw numbers hide the towns under most strain of informality. By % share of population in informal:
🔺 Divundu 60.9% 🔺 Bukalo 59.2% 🔺 Gobabis 59.0% 🔺 Leonardville 57.2% 🔺 Rundu 57.8% 🔺 Koes 52.1%
Small doesn't mean low priority. #DataForDevelopment

[Namibia OpenStreetMap Community. @OSMNamibia]

Introducing the Gap
Namibia has good baseline statistics on informal settlements. What it doesn't have:
❌ Open, parcel-level spatial data -A shared platform local authorities & NGOs can use ❌ Community-verified, continuously updated maps
That's the gap we are built to close. 🧭

[Namibia OpenStreetMap Community. @OSMNamibia]

Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, Namibia's economic coastline, carry 61,783 residents in informal housing between them. Erongo's growth (port expansion, green hydrogen investment) is pulling people in faster than housing and land administration can respond.
#LandAdministration #Namibia

[Namibia OpenStreetMap Community. @OSMNamibia]

Windhoek + Rundu
Windhoek and Rundu together hold 280,645 people in informal housing ,nearly half the national total.
Two cities. One capital, one regional hub. Both growing faster than formal planning can keep pace.
Data ≠ action until it's mapped, shared, and used #namibia

Early warning is only valuable when it leads to early action.
Across Africa, the challenge is not only detecting climate and environmental risks early, but ensuring that the right information reaches decision-makers in time to act.
Under our existing MoU with RainbirdGeo, we will be exploring joint work including the development of early warning and early action solutions, knowledge exchange and upcoming webinars to share tools, approaches and lessons with the wider community.

National average and Highest share

[Namibia OpenStreetMap Community. @OSMNamibia]

🧵 1/7 Namibia has an informal settlement problem hiding in plain sight. Data @namstatsagency
606,435 people, 41.6% of our entire urban population live in improvised housing.
That's not a "township issue." That's nearly half the country's towns and cities. A data thread 👇

[Namibia OpenStreetMap Community. @OSMNamibia]

4/7 Small towns often carry the heaviest proportional burden:
📍 Divundu : 60.9% of residents in informal housing
📍 Bukalo : 59.2%
📍 Gobabis : 59.0%
📍 Leonardville : 57.2%
📍 Koes : 52.1%
Percentage-wise, these small towns are in a worse position than Windhoek. But..
