@FictionIRL Late to this, but you should really study "n" both for a good implementation of this mechanic and also as an example of a good movement-based platformer.
Just went through every script in my game adding a debug message in front of every line that changes the player's state. Sounds stupid, but I spent more time trying to figure it out with my brain than with brawn

There was this one pdf file that translated every DnD block to GML and that's how I learned to code. Like I was using Google translate or something
@ZazLinkous Gamemaker is definitely the best place for beginners. It's simple enough that you can just start using it immediately, while also being close enough to "real" programming that you learn useful skills. The only reason I succeed in Unity is because I used gamemaker for so long.
@ZazLinkous I started with stagecast creator- would not recommend. I found Gamemaker a year later and used that for 10 years. Now I like prefer Unity because of its customization options. My workflow is almost exactly how it want it to be

@ZazLinkous@BryceMousseau I spent hours on the GMC forums. Usually in the Game Design section. The Q&A boards were helpful, and the WIP area was motivating.
I also really liked the weekly "Cage Match" where mods would choose two games and users would vote on their favorite.
