ISRAEL AND MOROCCO TEAM UP AGAINST WESTERN SAHARA

Morocco has become Israel's closest ally on the African continent. In many ways, the two countries share much in common.

Since 1975, Morocco has illegally occupied the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), also known as Western Sahara, causing 170,000 Sahrawi people to flee as refugees. Now, as Morocco strengthens its ties with Israel, it is securing new military and surveillance technologies from the z*onist state. Naturally, many Sahrawis draw connections between their struggle and that of the Palestinian people.

In this video, we talk to Taleb Alisalem, a Sahrawi political analyst, writer, and activist based in Madrid, who shares his perspective on how the people of Western Sahara are affected by the ongoing relationship between Israel and Morocco.

In the video, he references the Polisario Front. Polisario is an acronym for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and Río de Oro, which is the national liberation movement fighting Moroccan occupation on behalf of the Sahrawi people. The armed wing of the movement is the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army.

Occupation has led to the mass displacement of Sahrawi people, with 174,000 refugees living in Tindouf, Algeria. This may be equal to or greater than the population of Sahrawis who have been able to remain in Western Sahara. Meanwhile, up to 12,000 Sahrawi refugees may now live in Spain.
