Nikola Tesla, Michael Pupin, Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic, George Fisher, Karl Malden, Pete Maravich, Gregg Popovich, George Voinovich, Helen Delich Bentley, Rose Ann Vuich, Charles Simic, Walt Bogdanich, Steve Tesich, Peter Bogdanovich, Phebe Novakovic, Nicholas Chabraja, Lance Sijan, Mitchell Paige, Louis Cukela, Jake Allex, Mele Vojvodich Jr., and Serbian-American engineers who helped put Americans on the Moon.

Scientists, inventors, governors, senators, members of Congress, Pulitzer and Academy Award winners, business leaders, athletes, engineers, doctors and American servicemen who earned the Medal of Honor.

Serbian Americans have been building, defending, inventing, creating, and contributing to this country for generations. Since the very beginning.

To every global corporation currently paying Dua Lipa @DUALIPA to represent its brand, and every major company that has commercially associated its name with hers, is this what you’re paying for?

Dua Lipa has just used her enormous international platform to share the UÇK/KLA emblem, accompanied by #LIRIAKAEMER, “Freedom has a name,” immediately following the September 16 verdict in The Hague against four former senior KLA leaders.

Now look at the photographs attached to this post.

This is why that emblem is not some harmless piece of celebrity patriotism to countless Serbian families.

These horrifying wartime photographs, circulated for years in connection with KLA atrocities, show armed men posing with severed human heads. I am including them because people outside the Balkans need to understand exactly why glorification of the UÇK/KLA causes such outrage and pain among its victims and their families.

And these crimes are not simply a matter of Serbian political opinion or competing Balkan narratives.

On September 16, the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague convicted Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi of war crimes. The court found criminal responsibility for arbitrary detention involving 385 people, cruel treatment of 49, torture of 303, and murder of 96.

The victims weren’t only Serbs.

They included Serbs, Roma and Kosovo Albanians themselves, people perceived as opponents of the KLA’s political or military objectives.

Serbian Christians were among those murdered, tortured, kidnapped and displaced during this conflict. Families have lived with these memories for more than a quarter of a century.

So when an international celebrity broadcasts the UÇK emblem to tens of millions of people immediately after this judgment and tells the world that “Freedom has a name,” people have every right to ask what exactly is being celebrated and whether the multinational corporations paying her to represent them are comfortable having their brands associated with that message.

Dua Lipa isn’t an anonymous social media account.

She is one of the world’s most commercially valuable celebrities. Her image has been used to sell coffee, cosmetics, jewelry, luxury fashion, automobiles, electronics, sportswear, beverages and countless other products around the world.

Her commercial relationships, endorsements, campaigns and collaborations over the years have included:

Some of these relationships are current and others are historical, but corporations currently paying her to serve as their ambassador or represent their products have a particularly simple question to answer:

Is this what you’re paying for?

Do you believe broadcasting the UÇK/KLA emblem immediately following the conviction of former senior KLA leaders for war crimes is consistent with the values your company claims to represent?

Would you tell Serbian families whose relatives were murdered or disappeared that they should simply ignore it?

Would you tell Roma victims to ignore it?

Would you tell the Kosovo Albanian families whose relatives were targeted because they were considered political opponents or “collaborators” to ignore it?

This isn’t about asking corporations to take a position on Serbian Albanian politics.

It’s about asking corporations whether the standards they publicly advertise apply when the person involved happens to be one of the world’s biggest celebrities.

Your customers deserve an answer.
