The UAE announced that it has intercepted more than 500 attack drones, a 96% success rate.

At the same time, parts of the EU were disrupted for weeks by just a handful of non-military drones. Airports were temporarily closed, airspace was restricted, military bases in panic, and authorities struggled to respond. The drones were able to fly in, circle sensitive areas, and leave again without being stopped.

The situation exposed more than a technological gap - it highlighted legal and organizational confusion. In Belgium, for example, one drone reportedly operated for weeks without being intercepted. Airport authorities were not authorized to shoot it down. The military, even when it flew over their bases, faced legal restrictions as well. Responsibility was unclear, and no agency stepped in.

Only after the incidents ended did it emerge that Belgium actually has an anti-drone unit. The problem? No one contacted them. Airport officials, military personnel, and even politicians were apparently unaware of the unit’s existence. When asked why they hadn’t intervened, the unit’s response was simple: “Nobody asked us.”

That is the EU. This is the UAE.
