The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

Meanwhile a trade deficit simply means you bought more from someone than they bought from you. For example, let’s say I sell clothes and you sell food. In one month, I buy $1000 worth of food from you and you buy $800 clothes from me. Won’t it be utterly stupid if I say I lost $200? I bought what I needed and paid for it. You bought what you needed and paid for it. If I think the food can be cheaper, I can go and buy elsewhere innit?

BUTTTTT … let’s even look at the actual numbers.

Last year, the US bought about $380 billion worth of goods from Canada. Canada bought about $330 billion from the US. That’s a deficit of about $50 billion. But the US has about 8 times Canada’s population. Split those numbers across the population and it works out to roughly $7,900 of American goods for every Canadian, compared with about $1,100 of Canadian goods for every American.

So per person, Canadians actually bought about 7 times more American goods than Americans bought Canadian goods.

And oh, the actual average deficit across the last ten years is approximately $39 billion NOT $60 billion. Bunch of lying ass incompetent clowns.

What's the deal with the Gordie Howe Bridge?

Part 1/2: The Tolls

The claim of a new toll deal for the Gordie Howe bridge between Detroit and Windsor is political spin. To understand why we have to look at the original 2012 Crossing Agreement.

The Gordie Howe Bridge is arguably the most unique financial arrangement in U.S. border history. Because the U.S. refused to fund the bridge, Canada agreed to pay for everything:

🔸Construction: Canada paid 100% of the $6.4 billion (CAD) construction cost. This included building the bridge, the Canadian port of entry, and the U.S. Customs plaza in Detroit. The U.S. contributed $0 to capital construction.

🔸Maintenance & Repairs: The bridge is managed by a Canadian Crown corporation (the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, or WDBA). They hired a private consortium (Bridging North America) under a 30-year contract to handle all physical inspections, concrete repairs, and snow removal. Canada pays this bill.

🔸Employees: This is the only split. Canada built the physical U.S. Customs plaza, but the U.S. federal government pays the salaries of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers who sit inside the booths.

In exchange for taking on 100% of the debt, Canada collects 100% of the toll revenue until the bridge is paid off (estimated 30-50 years).

In a Public-Private Partnership (P3), toll revenues are legally locked in a trust to pay off the private bondholders who built the bridge. Canada cannot simply "agree" to give the U.S. half the tolls. To legally change the toll distribution, the U.S. Treasury would have had to write a $3.2 billion check to Canada to buy out half of the construction debt, which has not happened.

The fact remains: the U.S. got a massive, state-of-the-art $250 million Customs plaza built on American soil completely for free. It is a great deal for America, but it is the exact same deal signed 14 years ago before Trump was president. So there is no political capital to be gained with that for the current administration. Hence the spin.
