Today, I handed over more than 3 tonnes of medical supplies and equipment, along with motorbikes, to reinforce the #Ebola response in the #DRC.
Sincere thanks to our financial partners for their support and solidarity with the people of DRC at this critical time.
The #Ebola response in DRC continues to intensify.
With support from @WHO and partners, the Ebola treatment centre in Isiro, Haut-Uélé Province, has been expanded to accommodate more patients, enabling essential health services to continue at Isiro General Referral Hospital.
WHO has also delivered an additional tonne of medical supplies to support the response.
There continues to be strong progress in the #Ebola response in the #DRC.
-In the Haut-Uele provincial capital of Isiro, yesterday 25 survivors of BVD (13 women and 12 men) were discharged following treatment at a WHO-supported Ebola Treatment Centre (ETC).
-The 10-bed extension to the ETC was inaugurated with WHO support, in collaboration with MSF, taking its capacity to 50 beds. The Centre strengthens patient care while allowing the Isiro General Referral Hospital to keep delivering other essential health services.
-WHO also provided over one tonne of medical supplies to the Isiro hospital, including materials for the provision of oxygen, gloves and masks for health workers, and beds and mattresses.
-WHO is continuing to train health workers at its clinical training hub in the Ituri Province capital of Bunia, with 211 trained to date. WHO will be opening a new centre soon in North Kivu.
-Also yesterday, as part the DRC government-led vaccine programme, the first 100 frontline health workers in Haut-Uele Province received the ERVEBO vaccine, which is proven to protect against the Ebola Zaire strain, and is also being studied to see if effective against the Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) driving this current outbreak. More than 9000 frontline workers have so far received the ERVEBO vaccine as part of this effort.
-@MSF and partners have also vaccinated at least 870 frontline workers with ERVEBO vaccine as part of the “BRAVO” study assessing its impact on preventing serious disease and death from Bundibugyo.
-@WHO is closely following the use of the ERVEBO vaccine, while in parallel supporting the vaccine efficacy platform trial of both ERVEBO and BVD-specific vaccines expected to start in coming weeks.
While there are clear signs that the epidemic is slowing down in some areas, it is still growing in others. It is therefore critical that the response continue to scale up and reach where the outbreak already is and where it might be going.
WHO is supporting the DRC government, and all partners, to bring the outbreak under control as rapidly as possible, while looking to the future in strengthening health services in the region to protect communities against threat of future outbreaks.
Important progress is being made in the #Ebola response in DRC 🇨🇩.
In Isiro, the #Ebola Treatment Centre has expanded to 50 beds with @WHO support, in collaboration with @MSF, strengthening patient care while allowing Isiro General Referral Hospital to progressively resume its regular activities. Twenty-five Ebola survivors, including 13 women and 12 men, have been discharged after treatment.
In Haut-Uélé Province, frontline health workers are receiving the ERVEBO vaccine under the government-led programme. The vaccine is proven to protect against the Ebola virus (Zaire species), while its effectiveness against Bundibugyo virus disease, the cause of this outbreak, is still being studied.
WHO has also delivered over one tonne of medical supplies to Isiro General Referral Hospital, including oxygen supplies, gloves and masks for health workers, and beds and mattresses.
While there are encouraging signs of progress, the response must continue to scale up to reach affected communities and stay ahead of further spread. Health worker dedication, strong national leadership, community engagement and sustained partnerships remain critical to bringing this outbreak under control.
WHO remains committed to supporting the DRC government and partners to bring this outbreak under control, while strengthening health services to better protect communities from future outbreaks.
#Bundibugyo
With support from @FCDOGovUK, @eu_echo and #CERF, @WHO has provided 2.5 tonnes of supplies and equipment to private healthcare providers and traditional health practitioners in #Ituri.
This support follows training to help them better protect themselves, identify suspected #Ebola cases and refer them to appropriate health facilities.
@Prof_TBalde

Children under five face a higher risk of death from Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus than other age groups. Their condition can deteriorate rapidly, requiring specialised paediatric care and close monitoring.
@WHO and partners are working with health authorities and clinicians to strengthen care for children and improve their chances of survival.

Honoured to meet with H.E. @FA_Touadera, President of the Central African Republic, to discuss the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak and the urgent need to strengthen readiness across Central Africa.
I commend the President's commitment to championing regional action and stronger cross-border measures to protect lives and advance health security across the region.
Health threats do not respect borders. Strong political leadership is critical to strengthening preparedness and advancing cross-border cooperation, so countries can detect and respond rapidly to emerging threats.
