@TNOQuoProQuid Say what you will about 80s Fantasy doorstoppers, but you were going to visit every place on that Damn Map in the heroes quest to destroy the cursed sword
@xenocryptsite@bigseb31213 That's crazy. It was niche in the 00s but then the most widely carried wargame as historicals passed away
Interesting it lines up with the D&D explosion. Both had become the biggest thing in their niche in the US by that time?
@KooHo_jin@MattZeitlin Every bit of statistics history is either "interesting tidbit about industrial manufacturing", "farming", or "I am proving eugenics scientifically"
@MattZeitlin Not me. I've never trusted my gut once. When I got to a bar, I'm whipping out a p-test on reviews for each beer. If the diff is not significant, I simply choose randomly.
@rustbeltjacobin Sometimes fun stuff is still happening but they won't put it on the cover. This is a recent fantasy novel I liked about a teacher who fights demons in a modern British Boarding school. A phoenix shoots out of her arm! But b/c it's prestigious you get this cover, which is not bad
@xenocryptsite We have to support this so that PIRANESI adaptation gets made. "Uh, what if the backrooms looked cool and had a plot, please adapt this weird fantasy novel from a great writer"
@The_Clermontian In general I think it is pretty bad that it's hard to see clear reactions around the world from real changes in immigration policy. That is, lots of countries have cut immigration a lot in the last few years, and it's hard to see that this has brought salience down
@rocks_lab@MariGO2thepolls What's weird is that is now really long term; e.g. if you were a Sci-Fi fan in the 80s-90s there was no equivalent in the US of the amount of stuff that was getting animated through OVAs in Japan. And this is still happening.
@rocks_lab@MariGO2thepolls For some reason Japan has been much better at getting fans of something small to pony up a lot of money. Therefore if you have very specific niche interests you're much likelier to find a manga/anime about that than any US pop culture besides books.
@ROX_Hojin I think like a lot of people you enjoy arguing with people who might listen to you, and therefore mostly argue with people on your side. Me too.
@maiamindel [adjusts glasses] The Orange part is the protestant part. Herbert presumably meant it as a pun on both the Housr of Orange for Protestants and also saffron, the color of Buddhist Monks; since the OC is meant to be the collection of all religious traditions of mankind.
