This is very dark, but in 2017/18 I think, I got dangerously close to ending things. Backstory is very long, but that's not the point.

The point is, I couldn't do it because I had built a very intricate theory on Jon Snow as 'Azor Ahai', and Daenerys as the 'Mad Queen' which had been foreshadowed for so long in Game of Thrones. I knew Jon would have to kill her somehow, and then ride a dragon (as he, himself is a Targaryen) to a dragon fight with the Night King.

So I wanted to find out if I was, indeed, right. I dedicated my life to waiting out Season 8 of Game of Thrones, while rewatching the show to see if I'd missed any more cues, then I'd be gone after Sn 8. And the more rewatches I made, the more of the original material and sub-reddits I read, the more convinced I got that there surely, must be a purpose for me somewhere, however small. But my life was so burdened by (what are now) such trivial weights to bear that I was convinced that either life itself, or me, must die for me to be fine.

Maester Aemon's statement to Jon, however, stuck with me, "Kill the boy, and let the man be born." Jon Snow's story was especially significant for me because he, of all people in the show, had the claim of giving up because he'd been dealt an unjust hand, as I felt at the time. His story answered a very solipsistic question I had then, "but I didn't deserve this," yet he still bore the adventure of his life, unjust as it was, to his ultimate destiny somehow.

The coming back to life of Jon was equally symbolic, in a sense - that he was on a second lease of life. But also, because almost in a literal sense, this represented the 'killing of the boy and the birth of the man'. Everything he did since was resolute. They were choices he made, not merely pre-determined social norms, and he took up the consequences with a clear conscience such that his suffering never needed to be more than the substance of the suffering itself.

To mean that if he broke an arm running, all he had to deal with was the agony of a broken arm, and not existential questions around, 'why did I even go there where they break arms for running?'; because the running, for him, would have been a decision whose consequences, known and unknown, he was okay with in the first place.

He could leave the Night's Watch, pick a new path entirely, marry a queen, go back home etc. I figured that since I was gonna end it anyway, I might as well then pick up a new adventure as my 'second life' at least in the interim, as an experiment until season 8 comes. I had no reason to be anything or anyone so I could be anything or anyone.

I was at this point, as well, struggling immensely with my faith, and stumbled, almost comically upon the verses about New Wine and old wineskins. As well, the words unless a man is born again...I discovered I was due a rebirth of sorts.

I'd been previously constrained by lies, so I opted to pick a path of truth. I haven't been entirely successful at it, not exhaustively at least, but this has formed my foundational higher-self pursuit since. Life has gotten harder, and more complex over time, and I've faced multiple higher-stakes adversities but I have never felt the compulsion to sacrifice my ideals. Not strongly enough at least.

This is not to mean I haven't succumbed to lower-self urges and insticts. This means that they haven't been a consequence of externally-influenced corruption. You couldn't make me do something I believed to be bad, unless I wanted to do it myself.

You could lie to, or manipulate me, or convince me that your way was better modelled, if you were good enough. But could never get me to abandon a post of fundamental truth because of persuasion or personal gain, unless I very badly wanted to pursue that personal gain unjustly myself.

When my livelihood got interrupted by a protracted State-motivated court case during the protests in 2024, I received offers to sell my conscience politically, for a reprieve from my suffering and a substantial financial windfall. It was the first time my new self would be tested unfairly, at that scale, and in service of the man that had been born, I didn't budge. I consider it my baptism by fire moment, because my former self would not have had the resilience to weather that storm.

Anyway, long story short, Game of Thrones saved my life and somehow brought me closer to God and to the man I am, in a very strange process.

A word of advice to young men. If you ever feel like you need to off yourself, it's more likely that you need to kill the boy inside, that the man may be bort, than it is that you need to off yourself on the whole.

I do not know exactly how your life is structured but I believe that you cannot go wrong if you start with;
1. An honest assessment of where your life is, and taking responsibility for it
2. Pursuit of truth as you know it to be, deep down (this is not about 'my truth' btw, but absolute truths)
3. Aiming up, and walking up, despite how many times you stumble
4. Suffering the consequences of a higher pursuit without letting it make you cynical.

Then you probably might just enjoy life in its most basic, boring state. Oh, and watch Game of Thrones, please!

My heart goes out to those affected and still confused about what immigration laws to follow after yesterday’s deadline. Here is the legal position to help you plan.

If you are a foreign national from an East African Community (EAC) country and intend to reside in Kenya while doing business, trade or working, you can regularise your stay by applying for a Class R Permit.

Go to the Kenya eFNS portal on eCitizen and search for a ‘Class R’ Permit, available to EAC nationals who intend to reside in Kenya and earn a living.

This includes nationals of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan. Somalia is also an EAC Partner State.

The Class R Permit itself is FREE. Meaning, the processing fee and the issuance fee are both 0 (zero).

EAC nationals residing long-term must still fulfil standard Foreign National Registration requirements, such as the annual Alien Card fee, which is separate from the gratis Class R Permit.

Here is what you require:

You will need relevant supporting documents, including a valid passport and documents relating to your business or activity. Requirements may vary by sector. Small-scale traders may also be required to provide a Kenyan police clearance certificate where applicable.

Application Process:

Start online through the eFNS portal on eCitizen.

Where physical submission is required, print your forms and supporting documents and submit them at Immigration Headquarters or designated regional Immigration offices.

It is very important to note that not every EAC national visiting Kenya automatically needs a Class R Permit. EAC citizens enjoy general movement rights under the EAC Common Market framework, but those intending to reside, work, or run a business must ensure they hold the appropriate legal status.
