We recently partnered with @Makerere University’s
@googledevgroups for a hands-on workshop using AirQo’s API and digital mapping tools to visualize #AirPollution across Kampala.
Students explored how #AirQuality data can be turned into heatmaps, dashboards, and tools communities can understand and use.
This is what #OpenSource community building looks like, young developers using data, code, and collaboration to address public-interest challenges.
Join our @SlackHQ community to share ideas, collaborate, and help shape #OpenSource tools for cleaner, healthier cities.

Air quality monitoring is not only about deploying sensors. It is about generating reliable, accessible data that helps researchers, communities and decision-makers understand #AirPollution and act on it.
In Manhiça, Mozambique 🇲🇿, AirQo is supporting @Manhica_CISM with monitoring infrastructure, including Binos monitors and a reference monitor data logger, to enable remote access to high-resolution #AirQuality data and strengthen network reliability.
For African cities, this kind of local evidence is essential to inform planning, protect health and accelerate policy action on #CleanAir.

Open-source infrastructure makes it possible for cities and communities to build on shared knowledge instead of starting from scratch.
For African cities facing #AirPollution, this can support more transparent data systems, locally relevant applications, and stronger collaboration between researchers, developers, and decision-makers.
The question is not only how Africa uses open-source tools, but how Africa contributes to shaping them.

Watching young developers turn raw air quality data into working, visual tools in just a few hours reminded me exactly why I love this work. We used @GoogleAIStudio + the AirQo API to map and visualise air pollution across Kampala, and the energy in that room was something else!
Yesterday marked the successful close of Jinja City Air Quality Awareness Week 🌍
Together with @AirQoProject and @jinjacity, we brought together residents, partners, and city leaders at Lubaga for tree planting 🌱 and waste management sensitization ♻️, reinforcing the message that every breath matters.
We are proud to support cities in utilizing data to make informed decisions aimed at achieving cleaner air, effective waste management, and fostering more sustainable urban environments.

It’s #AirQualityAwarenessWeek.
Air pollution may be invisible, but its impact isn’t. The real question is how we move from awareness to action.
Data, technology, and informed everyday choices are a critical part of that shift, helping us better understand and respond to #AirPollution.
Start with one simple step: download the AirQo app and #KnowYourAir

From raw data to working prototypes in just hours, transforming complex #AirQuality data into clear, visual insights on pollution patterns across Kampala.
Working with AirQo’s API & digital mapping tools, @Makerere University's @googledevgroups are building everything from simple heatmaps to community-focused dashboards, making data easier to understand and bringing the realities of air pollution closer to everyday life.
What happens when young developers take on real-world environmental challenges? As we mark #AirQualityAwarenessWeek, it’s exciting to see it take shape in real time at @Makerere University with @googledevgroups.
A room full of young talent, building and scaling practical solutions to address the #AirPollution challenges our African cities face every day, turning #AirQuality data into tools that make pollution easier to understand and act on.
#AirQualityAwarenessWeek is a reminder that while awareness matters, translating #AirQuality data into action is key.
This week, we’re bringing together the @Makerere University @googledevgroups to build solutions that visualize #AirPollution across Kampala.
Using real-time data and digital tools, developers will design platforms that make #AirQuality more visible, understandable, and actionable.

🚨 Final call to join today’s conversation.
Across Africa, we are building with #OpenSource every day, powering research, environmental monitoring, data systems, and digital infrastructure.
Yet when it comes to shaping the systems themselves, contributing code, influencing governance, and guiding direction, Africa is still underrepresented.
Today, we’re bringing together practitioners to reflect on what meaningful participation in #OpenInfrastructure could look like for the continent, and what needs to shift for Africa to move from users to co-creators.
