Downtown’s population has doubled since 2000, yet 1 in 4 storefronts sit empty. Most curb space goes to cars parked all day, while pedestrians struggle down crowded sidewalks. People don’t linger, and shops pay the price. Streets made for people help bring storefronts back.

NYCDOT’s $4 billion BQE plan includes a “temporary” bypass with an elevated section over the Brooklyn Bridge. Before we lock in a decade of construction, they should study every alternative. Join us at the scoping hearings & make your voice heard.

This project is long overdue, and we're glad the city is taking action to redesign this dangerous corridor. Every New Yorker deserves safe streets; changes like these are how we get there- one block at a time.

Public spaces built for people are more vibrant, better for businesses, and great for fostering a connected community. NYC needs to reimagine its most heavily trafficked commercial corridors and expand pedestrianization wherever possible. If London can do it, we can too!

The moment Oxford Street became traffic-free.

Almost a kilometre of Oxford Street has been pedestrianised between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street, with cars, buses, taxis and bicycles no longer allowed.

This type of visionary project is needed here in NYC. London continues to set the example for how large megacities like ours can return space to people. We need to follow their lead on pedestrianization and pass Intro 1070 to create our first LTNs. A better NYC is possible!

[Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan @MayorofLondon]

Oxford Street. Reimagined.

If you want to see low-traffic neighborhoods roll out across New York, tell your Council Member to back Intro 1070! This transformative legislation will create better, quieter, and more pleasant streets for communities across the city. https://t.co/rMqLnIaH1Y

[Open Plans @OpenPlans]

Today we gathered at City Hall to advocate for a city that puts people first by prioritizing safe streets and to urge swift passage of Int 46, Int 113, Int 613, and Int 1070. Together we're building a safer, more livable New York!

[Open Plans @OpenPlans]

We envision a Downtown with more greenery, more residents, more retail and restaurants, with wider sidewalks and a better experience for pedestrians. Follow along as we explore how to make this vision a reality, and where the work needs to be done.

[Open Plans @OpenPlans]

Downtown’s streets predate cars by centuries, but today they’re overrun by vehicles. Narrow, historic blocks are clogged with congestion, illegal parking, blocked sidewalks and general chaos. For the vast majority who travel through the neighborhood on foot, it's a big problem 1/

[Open Plans @OpenPlans]

The streets of Downtown are where our city began. But we’ve let them become an unruly mess, w/ streets that don't work for anyone. It’s time to reimagine them, manage them more efficiently, and enforce existing rules to create a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant neighborhood.

[Open Plans @OpenPlans]

Join us TOMORROW at 9 AM!! After the rally, the Council’s Transportation Committee will hear legislation to improve street safety, including Int 1070 to pilot a Low Traffic Neighborhood in communities across at least three boroughs.

Watch this be super successful, and then the general public wonder why it wasn’t done sooner.

Detroit is turning I-375, a sunken highway that wiped out Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, into a surface boulevard. Cities are finally reckoning with what urban highways took from them. The BQE must be part of that conversation.

“I want there to be zero barriers to entry for a school to participate in this program, we can learn a lot from cities like Seattle, who have a really simple questionnaire.” - Sabina our Community Planner who helps schools with their applications. https://t.co/a1mfqMM1ms

Syracuse is tearing down the I-81 viaduct that split its city for decades and replacing it with a street grid that reconnects the neighborhoods the highway cut apart. If Syracuse can rethink its highways, so can NYC.
