When you write shader code, it is stored in a medium format that all of these different drivers will interpret for their specific hardware. So its a bit more involved than loading, say, a text file as it is device dependent.

I'd argue it creates a stronger identity for them and is easier to read when you follow that convention anyway. It also completely eliminates this singular edge case that differentiates the two styles.
