Ustādh Abu 'Ukkashah (may Allāh preserve him) mentioned a beautiful piece of advice that Shaykh, al-'Allāmah Sālih al-Luhaydān (may Allāh have mercy upon him) gave them:
He (the Shaykh) advised us that there should not be a gathering of ours except that a verse from the Qur'ān or a hadeeth should be mentioned in it.
A common and widespread practice during times of bereavement is for people to gather together, or to send messages encouraging others to recite Sūrah al-Fātihah on behalf of the deceased. Is there any basis for this practice in the Qur'ān or the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)? Was it from the actions of the noble Companions (may Allāh be pleased with them all)?

Sh Badī'ud-dīn ar-Rāshidī, Allah have mercy on him, after explaining that being grateful to Allah occurs within the heart, and on the tounge, and with the physical body:
As for the body, then (thankfulness) is by using it for worship and obligatory actions, seeking the pleasure of Allah. As He says:
Rather worship Allah alone and be from the grateful. Surah Az-Zumar: 66
And this is along side refraining from disobedience to Allah and His Messenger.
Al-Bayhaqqi mentions the narration of Imām Sufyān bin 'Uyaynah that he was asked about being grateful so he said, "It is that you refrain from disobedience."

Not forgetting those who have passed away from the Muslims, especially from our loved ones, seeking sincere forgiveness for them has a great impact on them in their graves and in their hereafter.
Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Tayymiyyah al-Harrānī (d. 768 AH):
If the common people knew that missing a prayer is like missing the month of Ramadan, by the consensus of the Muslims, they would strive to perform it on time.
