To a computer, words like "bank", "river", or "reindeer" hold no inherent meaning; they are merely arbitrary strings of text. Before a computer can reason with language, translate, or generate stories, it must first convert raw, unstructured words into a format that it can perform math on: numbers. But simply assigning a serial numerical ID to every word in the dictionary turns out to be a mathematical dead end.

Language is not a flat, one-dimensional list of unconnected words ; it is a rich, interconnected web of meanings, contexts, analogies, and subtle shades of emotion. To bridge this gap, modern artificial intelligence relies on a profound paradigm shift: transforming words into points on a multi-dimensional geometric space.

In my latest substack article which is the first of two in a series, I write about :

The real test, however, is whether these directions will be implemented uniformly across Mumbai.

Since April 2026, we have repeatedly requested action against the illegal weekly vegetable market systematically occupying the pedestrian footpaths of the declared No Hawking Zone on 90 ft Swapna Nagari Road, Mulund (W).

Despite representations, meetings, MARG complaints, RTI and a First Appeal, the encroachment continues every Tuesday.

📢 Update on BMC Commissioner's orders to keep Mumbai's footpaths encroachment-free:

A day after directing civic officials to clear encroachments from footpaths across Mumbai, BMC Commissioner @AshwiniBhide orders strict monitoring and accountability mechanism to ensure implementation of the drive.

Details below 👇

- Assistant Commissioners will conduct daily inspections of footpaths in their wards and review daily progress reports with before-and-after photographs.

- Deputy Commissioners will carry out weekly zonal reviews and submit reports to the Additional Municipal Commissioners.

- Additional Municipal Commissioners will review the progress every 15 days.

- Commissioner has warned that any negligence, delay or failure to implement the orders will not be tolerated.

- Responsibility will be fixed on the concerned officers, who will face strict disciplinary action for any lapse.

- Officials have also been directed to prepare a priority-wise list of footpaths to ensure systematic implementation and continuous monitoring.

A detailed engineering and design directions for footpaths is issued, including:

- Removal of non-standard or uneven ramps.

- Ensuring building entrances and doors open inward within property boundaries, not onto footpaths.

- Scientific pruning of tree branches obstructing pedestrian movement.

- Construction of new footpaths only as per the prescribed standard design using M40-grade concrete.

- No use of paver blocks or stamped concrete for new footpaths.

- Removal of gaps, uneven levels and other physical obstacles to make footpaths safe and accessible for pedestrians.

Remove encroachments and free up Mumbai's footpaths - BMC Commissioner @AshwiniBhide

At a review meeting held on Friday, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide directed civic officials to prioritise the removal of encroachments from footpaths across Mumbai.

As per BMC, Assistant Commissioners have been instructed to clear footpaths near schools, hospitals, railway stations, Metro stations, bus terminals and markets by removing unauthorised hawkers, illegal structures and improperly constructed ramps to make them safe and accessible for pedestrians.

Commissioner said clean and unobstructed footpaths are a hallmark of a well-functioning city, noting that nearly 50 per cent of Mumbai's residents rely on walking as part of their daily commute. She added that encouraging greater use of footpaths would improve traffic flow and help reduce pollution.
