🚨 JUSTICE FOR OUR STUDENTS! ⚖️ | FUOYESUG PETITIONS EKITI STATE POLICE COMMAND
The Students’ Union Government of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has formally petitioned the Ekiti State Police Command over the alleged unlawful detention and brutal assault of FUOYE students, as well as alleged threats to the lives of student leaders and university officials at the Ikole Police Command.
On September 4, three FUOYE students reportedly visited a private hostel in Ikole-Ekiti to inspect household items advertised for sale. They were allegedly confronted and violently assaulted following accusations that the items were stolen, leaving the students with serious injuries. Some of the injured students were subsequently handed over to the police.
According to the petition, the students have remained in police custody for several days without being arraigned or granted administrative bail. When a joint delegation of the SUG, Student Affairs and University Security Unit visited the police command to seek a lawful resolution, the situation allegedly escalated.
The petition further alleges that university officials and student leaders were threatened with firearms and that tear gas was deployed against members of the delegation.
In response, the SUG is demanding the immediate release or lawful arraignment of the detained students, an independent investigation into the incident, accountability for those responsible for the alleged assault, and appropriate action against officers implicated in the allegations.
The Ekiti State Police Command has been given 48 hours from receipt of the petition to take concrete action. Failure to do so will result in the matter being escalated to relevant authorities, including the Police Service Commission, National Human Rights Commission and Inspector-General of Police.
This is about more than individual students. It is about justice, due process, accountability and the safety of every FUOYE student.
Our students must be protected. Their rights must be respected. Their safety is non negotiable.
God bless FUOYE
God bless Ekiti State
God bless Nigeria.
