A peer-reviewed study finds that most of the temperature rise observed over the past century in the US isn't from greenhouse gases, but instead from roads, buildings and parking lots.

By comparing raw US temperature data from stations in areas with different population densities, the study found that 65% of the warming since 1895 is explained by the urban heat island effect, and another 8% by urban growth into once-rural areas.

That's nearly three quarters of the warming, with no CO2 involved.

Crucially, NOAA's adjusted data hides this effect. Homogenization smooths it out, a process the study's author, Dr Roy Spencer, calls "urban blending."

It's not "global warming," it's urbanization.

Fifty years after the Battle of Gettysburg, thousands of aging Civil War veterans returned to the Pennsylvania battlefield where they had once fought as young soldiers. The 1913 Gettysburg Reunion commemorated the battle’s semicentennial and became one of the largest gatherings of Civil War veterans ever held. Men who had once faced one another across stone walls, ridges, and open fields reunited as survivors of the conflict that had transformed the United States.

Veterans were housed in a sprawling temporary camp near the battlefield, and many were now in their seventies or eighties. They revisited landmarks such as Cemetery Ridge, Little Round Top, and the site of Pickett’s Charge, where some of the war’s fiercest fighting had taken place in July 1863.

One of the reunion’s defining moments came during a ceremonial reenactment of Pickett’s Charge, when surviving Confederate veterans crossed the field and were greeted by Union veterans with handshakes instead of gunfire. More than 50,000 veterans attended the event, and the widely photographed gestures of reconciliation became enduring symbols of national reunion, even as many of the war’s underlying issues and legacies remained unresolved.

CO₂ may have been painted as an agent of future crisis by the climate cavalcade. Yet science shows once again that this miracle molecule is the world's primary engine of agricultural abundance.

A few years after promising free speech, they started jailing people for using it. The same men who wrote the First Amendment. And they knew exactly what they were doing.

They wrote: "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech." Eight years later, they jailed people for criticizing the government.

In 1798, President John Adams was furious. Newspapers were mocking him, accusing him of pushing the country toward war with France. So Adams and his Federalist allies in Congress passed the Sedition Act of 1798. It made it a crime to publish "false, scandalous, or malicious" writing about the government.

The definition of "malicious"? Decided by Adams' own judges.

Editors were arrested first. Congressman Matthew Lyon of Vermont was the first person prosecuted. He had written that Adams had "an unbounded thirst for ridiculous pomp." For that, he was fined $1,000 and sentenced to four months in prison. While in jail, he won reelection to Congress.

Another man, Luther Baldwin, was arrested after saying in a tavern that he "did not care if they fired through [the president's] arse" during a cannon salute. For that drunken remark, he was fined and locked up.

Roughly 25 people were arrested, journalists and newspaper owners, almost all critics of Adams' party.

Here's the part that should bother you: the same men who fought a revolution against British tyranny, the same generation that wrote the First Amendment, used government power to silence their own citizens within a single decade.

Thomas Jefferson called it exactly what it was. He said the law would "go far to fix the antipathy of the people" against the men in power. He was right. The backlash helped him win the presidency in 1800.

Once in office, Jefferson let the Sedition Act expire and pardoned everyone convicted. But the precedent didn't disappear. Versions of "criticizing the government is dangerous" have resurfaced again and again.

Defenders of Adams say: the country was on the edge of war with France. The Sedition Act was a wartime necessity to stop foreign propaganda from tearing the nation apart.

Critics say: that's exactly the excuse every government uses, "national security", to silence dissent. The men who wrote the First Amendment knew better than anyone what they were doing when they ignored it.
