Statement by the Chairperson of the AU Commission on International Youth Day.

On the occasion of International Youth Day, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, extends his warmest greetings to Africa’s young people, whose energy, creativity and determination are central to the continent’s future.

From the outset of his campaign for the leadership of the African Union Commission, youth empowerment was identified as one of his priorities. He remains committed to translating this priority into meaningful opportunities for young Africans to participate, lead and contribute to the continent’s development and integration.

“Africa’s youth are not simply the leaders of tomorrow; they are partners and leaders today. Their voices, ideas and aspirations must be at the heart of the decisions that shape our shared future,” the Chairperson said.

He @ymahmoudali underscored that empowering Africa’s youth requires more than recognition; it demands sustained investment in their education, skills, entrepreneurship, employment and meaningful participation in decision-making.

“We must move from speaking about young people to working with young people. Their energy, innovation and determination are indispensable to building the Africa We Want,” he said.

The Chairperson further called for stronger partnerships between governments, institutions, the private sector and young people to create an enabling environment in which Africa’s youth can realise their full potential.

“Youth empowerment is not an option; it is a continental imperative. Africa’s future will be shaped by how effectively we invest in, listen to and create opportunities for our young people today,” the Chairperson affirmed.

On this International Youth Day, the Chairperson reaffirmed his commitment to placing Africa’s youth at the centre of the African Union’s efforts to advance an inclusive, peaceful and prosperous continent.

He wished all African youth a happy and inspiring International Youth Day.

Les conflits d’aujourd’hui ne connaissent pas de frontières. Leurs conséquences se propagent bien au-delà des zones de combat, touchant les populations, les économies et la stabilité de régions entières.

Le rôle du Secrétaire général est d’agir en amont : anticiper les risques, créer un espace pour le dialogue et exercer ses bons offices avec persévérance, impartialité et présence permanente.

C’est ainsi que les Nations Unies peuvent contribuer à prévenir les crises avant qu’elles ne s’aggravent.
