In civil proceedings, where counsel is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), the correct practice is that the SAN does not appear alone in a civil matter but appears alongside a junior counsel or another colleague (often “with me is…”).

A proper announcement of appearance would therefore be:

“May it please this Honourable Court, I am C.P. Joshua, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, appearing for the Claimant, with me is Joshua A. Peter.”

This is very funny because my own study method is completely different. In fact, from 400 level to 500 level, I did not have a single note, and I was still getting A, A, A.

What I usually do is get somebody’s notes and start reading. But for my study method to work properly, I have to start early. That is the foundation of everything.

So the first thing I do is read the entire course from beginning to end. No pressure to memorize anything yet. I just want to understand and become familiar with the material. Then I move to another course and do the same thing. Then another course. Then another one until I have gone through all the courses once.

After that, I come back for the second reading, and this is where the real work starts.

This time, I read from the textbook, close the book, and repeat what I just read from memory. What I call the active recall process. I can read three or four lines, close the book, say it back to myself, open the book again to confirm whether I got it correctly, then close it again and repeat it. I continue like that from the beginning of the course to the end.

Then I repeat that same process for the other courses.

After that, I come back again for the third reading and do the same active recall process. By this point, the material is already entering my head naturally because I have seen it multiple times and forced myself to remember it without looking.

When I finish all that, I move to past questions. After practicing past questions, I still come back again to read.

The difference between me and somebody who keeps writing notes is that I become more conversational and more familiar with the material itself, not just familiar with what was written on paper.

To me, constantly writing what you read is too energy consuming. It drains strength unnecessarily. It consumes paper, consumes books, and honestly feels inefficient. Some people spend more time rewriting textbooks than actually remembering what they studied.

I prefer to train my memory directly.

Because at the end of the day, in the exam hall, nobody is going to ask whether your notes were neat. The real question is whether you can remember and reproduce what you studied without opening the book.

That is why I practice active recall.

Don’t play with your externship.

Avoid the temptation to keep re-reading the same topic repeatedly. Read it, understand it, revise briefly if necessary, and move forward.

I remember being trapped in that cycle — reading the same weeks over and over again, yet still forgetting them. Everything changed when I made a deliberate decision not to remain on topics I had already covered.

The nature of externship is intense and broad. Time moves quickly, and the syllabus is usually too wide to waste weeks trying to perfect one area while neglecting others.
