As Europe’s cities burn, and its economy becomes sclerotic, the US should be actively encouraging the immigration of high-end human capital from Europe. Scientists, small businesspeople, programmers, biotech researchers, and farmers should all be welcome.
America benefitted hugely from waves of highly-skilled European talent that came here following the failed European revolutions of 1848, late 19th century Czarist repression and upheavals, and before and after WW2. European immigrants helped build our oil and steel industries, our universities, Hollywood, and the atomic bomb.
Its time to offer a new generation of skilled refugees a home.
*THIS* post perfectly encapsulates the decadence and degeneracy of the contemporary US foreign policy establishment. In this view, a US Secretary of State is only *supposed* to travel to NATO capitals because a successful US foreign policy is what makes diplomatic counterparts in Paris, Berlin, and Brussels raise a champagne toast to “shared values” while flinging open their borders, destroying their economies, and apologizing for Western civilization. God forbid a US Secretary of State show his face in Bogotá, Quito, or Lima because that’s where mere “Assistant Secretaries” are supposed to tread. This smug approach led not only to predictably catastrophic results in the Western Hemisphere but also in Europe itself, where the combination of moral vanity and strategic incoherence also proved toxic. But sure: keep holding your academic seminars, writing your unread articles, awarding each other meaningless prizes, and looking down your noses at Donald Trump and Marco Rubio.
M Street and Wisconsin in Georgetown taken over by a large crowd of celebrating Iranians, chanting USA USA … not what I was expecting during my run today.
If ID checks are “Jim Crow,” then so are Democratic National Conventions, where delegates are required to produce ID to get in!
So are the following institutions (among many others):
• Labor Union Conventions
• The Grammys
• The Oscars
• The Emmys
• Banks
• Pharmacies
• Hospitals
• Airports
• Hotels
• Gun Shops
• Casinos
• Schools
• Social Security
• DMVs
• Casinos
• Employers
IDs prevent fraud in finance, health, the Democratic Party, and so much more
Voter ID does the same for elections
Calling ID requirements “Jim Crow” is absurd and insulting to the American people, who overwhelmingly
agree that we need to take a few simple steps to make our elections secure
So, what *really* worries you about the SAVE America Act and its voter ID requirements?
On March 12, 2003, Serbian PM Zoran Djindjic was assassinated in Belgrade by a sniper from a special police unit with ties to organized crime.
This tragedy reminds us 22 years later that the merging of organized crime, politics and cash remain a serious problem in many locations throughout the region. Photo below is from a political rally in Nis on November 8, 1997 earlier in his political career.
Get cell phones out of the classroom. Start physical education in kindergarten. Bring back the presidential fitness test. The best way to save on health costs in the long run is to foster a healthier population in the first place. It’s going to be up to the states to step up & get it done.
We honor the six million Jews who perished, along with others, and salute the survivors on Holocaust Remembrance Day. We must never forget the evil of the Holocaust nor the resilience, courage, and hope of those who resisted and rebuilt.
@chamath Well said Chamath — and we are looking forward to having David on the Pod from the situation room at The White House. Besties rule CA & DC!
