Short thread on how this works 🧵
Something you should know:
Napoleon completely transformed France's education system.
He created primary, secondary (Lycees) and technical schools.
Within the schools, the kids learned: numbers, writing, and langauge - and also more advanced subjects like mathematics, history, physics, geography, and botany.
There was a heavy focus on science:
"the difficulty of finding subordinates with the technical training to execute his industrial and engineering projects, and the bent of his own genius, led Napoleon to emphasize the training of the scientist as equally important with the training of the scholar, and his efforts helped to make France the home of scientific thought in the early years of the nineteenth century." (Bruun 146-147)
Napoleon was hell bent on building an education system that would produce leaders and competent indivudals to help him run his Empire.
And he even created schools for women (who had been neglected up until his reign).
Peter the Great took a similar approach in focusing on science a century eariler and basically pulled Russia out of the Medieval times...
NOTE: In the picture below Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) is demonstrating his pile (battery) to Napoleon.
