Tomorrow, the Hon'ble Minister of IT and Digital Services, Dr @ptrmadurai, will formally launch the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme at Government Kallar High School in Muthupatti, Ward 93 of Madurai.

Devastated to hear of the tragic accident at Madurai Junction this morning that has claimed lives and caused injuries to others. News reports indicate there was a cylinder blast while passengers attempted to cook inside the compartment of a stopped train. I came to Chennai yesterday for a school function, but am returning to Madurai this morning to see how we can help during this difficult time.

I was delighted to spend this morning in Madurai, sharing a meal with excited little children and partaking of their joy as I initiated the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme (CMBS) in the Muthuppatti Kallar Higher Secondary School. Adequate nutrition is intrinsic to children's health and well-being, and it increases their learning outcomes.

A scheme like the CMBS, which was first inaugurated by the Hon'ble CM @mkstalin in my Constituency last September, and is now being expanded to all elementary schools around the state, has many benefits. In addition to fostering bonding among students, it has been proven to increase attendance by more than 20% in a large proportion of the schools in the pilot phase. Above all, it promotes social justice, and allows mothers to attend to other responsibilities, secure in the knowledge that their children will receive adequate nutrition in the morning.

Of the many new schemes initiated during my two-year tenure as Finance Minister, this is arguably the one with the most efficient and effective annual expenditure of Public Resources. It is the benchmark against which all schemes should be evaluated, in my opinion.

Over the weekend I had the unexpected joy of an engrossing (as always) discussion with Dr Raghuram Rajan who very kindly called on me in Chennai. We have much in common, starting with our last names and extending to views on development and growth – though our career paths have been very different indeed.

I first met him over 20 years ago at the Sloan School of Management at MIT, when I was a student, and he was visiting his alma mater on leave from his Professorial role at the University of Chicago. I’ve followed his work with great admiration: through his roles at the IMF, as Chief Economic Adviser to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, and then as Governor of the RBI.

His thought-provoking books -- Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists (2004), co-authored with fellow Chicago Booth professor Luigi Zingales; I Do What I Do (2017), a compilation of his op-eds and talks delivered during his stint as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India; and The Third Pillar: How the State and Markets are leaving Communities Behind (2019) -- resonate with my understanding of the world and the major issues at stake, developed through my own varied career in Banking and the Global Financial Markets.

It was therefore a great privilege for me to work directly with him for two years, when he immediately accepted my invitation to join the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Council of Economic Advisors back in 2021. Beyond his great erudition and wisdom, I found him to be a true patriot and a deeply compassionate individual – he was the strongest advocate for what was to become our post-pandemic remedial education program “Illam Thedi Kalvi”, and our support programs for MSMEs.

Though we will not be working together after my Ministerial portfolio change, he remains an inspiration to me, and now a dear friend as well. During our recent discussion he touched upon the book he is currently writing. I think it will provide unique clarity about India’s best path for growth, and I can’t wait for it to be published. Our chat also inspired me to work on a book of my own, on the lessons learnt during my two years as Finance Minister and a member of the GST Council, as well as some of its Group(s) of Ministers (sub-committees).

And I look forward very much to his next visit when he has promised to bring his tennis racket along so we can enjoy another shared interest!

I spoke at the biannual Economic Network India (ENI) meeting on Thursday, 25th May, in Chennai, organised by @NLinIndia to further strengthen Indo-Dutch trade & investment relations. Participants at the meet included the Consul Generals, the Honorary Consuls from India, Nepal and Bhutan, the Netherlands Business Support Offices (NBSOs) and the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA). My talk centred on how best the Netherlands can profitably participate in Tamil Nadu’s growth story. I shared unique perspective & experience to explain why our state should be seen as a premier investment destination. I invited the participation of the Netherlands at the Global Investors meet scheduled in Chennai during January 2024.

Hosted my dear friend the Consul General of France @FranceinPondi, Lise Talbot Barré and the Economics Affairs Officer Carla Frier for dinner. They were accompanied by Viji Sivanarayanan, the Press and Protocol Officer from Bureau de France (Chennai), and Sciences Po (Paris) Alumnus & DMK Spokesperson Salem Dharanidharan. Several French Tech companies including Atos, Capgemini, BNP Paribas, & Dassault Systems are a part of Tamil Nadu’s IT landscape. Though I could not accept the invitation to the Viva Tech Conference in Paris this month, we discussed a potential visit to France in the Fall to draw investments for the Global Investor Meet to be held in January 2024.

On the seventeenth anniversary of the passing of my dear father PTR Palanivel Rajan (27.02.1932 - 20.05.2006), I feel his absence more than ever. Losing my father was a traumatic and defining moment in my life. I had just turned forty, and I was on a business trip in Tokyo when I received the heart-breaking news. We were expecting our second child, and we were filled with the grief that my father would never meet this grandchild. It is an undying regret that I was not by his side in his last moments.

His death was especially poignant as he was on the train to Madurai for a rousing reception, having just been sworn-in as Minister for Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments, when he suffered a fatal heart attack. A planned celebration in my father’s honour turned into his funeral rites.

This unforeseen, tragic turn of events still weighs on me. The healing which nurtures me is the love and regard with which the people of Madurai and the state hold my dear father. Almost every day, I meet someone who shares some anecdote about my father and the transformative role he played in their life.

Since I only entered public life to follow the path of my forefathers, there have been several moments of crisis where I have had to ask myself: “What would my father tell me to do if he were alive today, and able to offer me guidance?” And in these minutes of soul-searching, I realise that my father’s advice to me is not through words but through the way he lived his life.

This Memorial Day, in the light of recent developments, I reflect even more than usual on my father’s life. Political office and other positions touched him only fleetingly through his diverse career and life. But he is remembered today for the immense good he did for people. If there is a key lesson from my father’s life (of the many I can learn), it is the realisation that all positions are outside of our control and short-lived.

What lives after us, and what has long outlived my father, are our good deeds, our service to the people - whether in office or not.
